I never ran an engine without, but I did run a rearend without oil once...it got about 10 miles, and made me a firm believer.

Yep.... High volume pumps tend to coat the driveway quickly! I won't debate oil, I use what works for me & has for decades. The diesel transport trucks get Rotella T-6 from day one & they are currently at 788,000 & 607,000 miles on the originals so I guess it works. I have a pretty big stock of ZR-1 in the cabinet for Stubby & other cars. Other than that, I don't think much about it. I drove my ot car 20 miles on a half quart of oil once because I had no choice back when I first started dating my wife 9 years ago. Fixed the leak and threw five quarts of discount dollar store oil in it and kept going. Engine still lives lol
Yeah I feel your pain…. My wife’s GMC was recently serviced at the dealership and it was $164 with coupon. All my other stuff gets taken care of here, my OT daily is all Motorcraft oil and filters and the others are all canister filters (swap meet scores) and some cheap got it on close out SAE 20/30 weight oil. So the oil change in my woodie this weekend will cost $1.75 in 1980’s money
I bought my High Country in 2020 and bought the lifetime oil changes they offered at the dealership. That paid off!
Just asking The Lifetime oil change can you Just show up & have done in 1 hour or less, Appointment Or a 3-4 hr wait ? Related but not I stop @ local shop 15 bays with 10 tec's To have 2 tire broke down Wheels in hand , No remount. Was told 4 hr wait . I told service writer I can do my self & still pay , No ! I understand Liability insurance blah blah blah. tire machine in view 15 to 20 feet from counter. I only was looking to have done @ shop Trying to save time because had to go out a few other stops . Left Service center went back to my shop with wheels car already on lift I grabbed a 2x4 about 4 ft long put under arm @ post slowly let lift down popped tire off beed. As I have became older time = $ my logic might & is screwy
A Harbor Freight or Northern Tool manual tire changer and a proper "Duckbill" attachment can be a useful addition to your shop.
Kind of scratching my head on this one as Laura drives an OT 2020 Subaru Crosstrek as her daily. I was going to change her oil & filter a few weeks ago & found out that buying the oil & filter was only $20.00 less than what the dealership would have charged her. She gets free car washes since she bought it at that dealership, so I told her...just let them do it! $20 bucks is well worth it when I can barely breathe most of the time with taking care of her, my elderly Parents & running my business. I was driving a ot diesel cube van for work many years back. It was already worn out, and the boss would have it running when I got to work. The glow plugs were shot and it wouldn't always restart so you didn't dare shut it off once it was running. One day I noticed the temperature coming up and oil pressure going down going down the highway. Pulled over and the dipstick was steaming with nothing on it. Between my truck and another one with me, we found 4 liters of various oil that we had. The oil just came on to the bottom of the stick. The thing kept running for years.
Coincidentally my "change oil" message is on right now. I haven't driven much in the last 9 months, so it is just timing out (not near the mileage for a change) but I made an appointment last week. They change it whenever the truck says it is time. They couldn't take it until the 10th but it is a "drop off and wait for it" kind of a deal. Out of there in an hour or less. I have received at least three texts from the dealership since I made that appointment wanting to know if I would accept a free appraisal of the trucks value while it is there, for them to purchase straight out or trade in. I fear they have grown tired of my free oil changes.
I think I'm in the same boat. I used to get the $28.99 oil change coupons in the mail on a regular basis and used to take advantage of them. However, since my "No $115.00 ch***is lube" decision, I haven't seen one in months.
$42 for a gallon of Lucas Hot Rod oil + 1 single quart. $8.00 for Wix filter once a year is ok by me. Shaeffers for the race car is a different story all together!
I've been adding up the numbers, that expensive oil and filter change is still a lot cheaper then replacing the motor. A few weeks ago I bought a 12 quart case of 10 W 30 at our local farm store for under $30, and the oil filter was $6. That stuff has worked on the stuff I have owned pretty good for nearly 20 years, i see no reason to change things now.
Very Interesting to hear that your part of the world has not gone crazy yet on labor rates and parts mark ups like it has here in Northern Wisconsin. I live in the heart of tourist country, that is the only industry here other than some logging, hospitals/ clinics ( we're all old ) LOL, it's a retirement and the tourist area of the Northwoods. Things were not crazy like this money wise when I bought this land 34 years ago, We love it here, the Serenity, Beauty and everything has always cost a little more here, I accept that, it's worth it to me. I'm going to call the Sudaru dealer and question again the price of an oil change and then how it can be that much cheaper in Ohio, you're talking $57, I'd pay that in a heartbeat. I'm Curios ? Here, There are plenty of good places to eat, example a breakfast, skillet, omelets, eggs Benedict for two with coffee and tip will be $30+-$40+, we don't go out for breakfast as often anymore, I've become quite the breakfast chef, we do go out weekly for dinner when/ if catching a special usually $40+ otherwise 50/60+ all in, rarely any supper club $100+ We eat at Culvers 2 x week usually around $25/ for us. Restaurant $ in Ohio ? That's It !, I'm officially an old fart, I hear my Dad talking, I remember the first time we had bottled water in the cooler when going racing, I got quite the lecture on what the hell is the matter with me, tap water at home and ice in freezer, but he did drink the bottled water LOL. He p***ed before my wing Sprint car deal, the tire bill alone would have gave him a heart attack.
The reason Walmart etc can sell oil for a low price is that they buy at such a tremendously low price due to the volume. Also they may sell at cost or below to get people in the door. When I was in HS I worked at a local Auto parts store. I remember the owner getting mad every time KMart ran an add for oil they had on sale, they were selling oil cheaper than he could buy it whole sale. Good for the consumer, not so good for the little business man. Some things never change. Dan
I have read the $ volume of goods purchased from China by Walmart is equal to the 3rd or 4th largest economy in the world. That is the definition of purchasing power and why 6 or 7 on the wealthiest people list in the world are from the Walmart family. I remember when Sam's club started, the father, Sam Walton mid /late 80's the beginning of Walmart was the best deal on brand name tires period. I bought several sets through the years. and other items, still have a Sam's club card. We all ***** Walmart, We shop there for most items, including tires now. They have changed the retail world, along with Amazon for good or bad it is what it is. Our next big change is AI, I'll be gone, concerned for my grandchildren. Us Baby Boomers have lived in the best of times and I am grateful for it.
I agree with your last sentence. Some people wish that they could be 20 years old again, whereas I'm glad that I was 20 back when I was, as opposed to now. I just wish that I'd bought some Apple stock the first day it went public...
Came to say this. Yes, it costs more, but think if your local parts store closes. NAPA seems to be best if you have one local.
Man I wish once a year. I drive my old junk daily. Over 30,000 miles in 2.5 years on my 1960 f100. My current project shoebox will take over nice months once it's on the road but the milage will be the same.
Probably true. Lots of farm trucks get driven very little. I've seen 40 year old grain trucks for sale with 30k miles. And my Dad had an old 216 Chevy winch truck used solely to lift cards for parts removal or loading strip out bodies at his salvage. It was worn out when he got it. Rings, gaskets and rod shims removed to run it another 25 with what ever oil happened to be available, including drain oil from the good trucks.
Been using wally world oil for 30 years, never had a problem. Just heard the "oil shortage" rumor so stocked up on 6 of the 5 quart jugs for about 18 bucks a pop.
Agreed. We have an OT 2008 Prius that eats headlight bulbs. These are a bear to change even with lots of experience. Walmart does it quick and under $20 if you buy the bulb. No brainer
