For another second or so longer, then the story was probably very different.
The guy driving the rail was putting on a great show, the fans probably ate it up.
I guess it depends on how long the race distance is suppose to be. You could probably beat the rail in a foot race, if the track was short enough.

I had a pretty hot off topic car, one of my buddies had a modified 250 dirt bike. The bet was he could beat my car for 100 feet. He got me off the line for about the length of my car, at the 50' line I went past him like he was going backwards. He couldn't believe it, with every other race he had easily won. The other guys that raced him, raced like they were on the drag strip, launched at high rpm, and they were still spinning at the 100' line. I let the clutch out just over an idle, then throttled into the carb. The tires were still spinning, but the car was moving. I did a bit of street racing, dumping the clutch at wide open throttle may work at the strip, but it didn't work on the street.

it was Captain Jack McClure on his turbonique rocket powered go kart. I have a clone of that kart here and Captain Jack has been here to see it, he was 91 years old when he was here and he was still running another rocket powered kart
