glad you figured it out. The y firing order is often confused—and of course counterclockwise dist rotation. The continued running of this engine, along with tweaking and road miles, will probably improve it over time. get it up to temp then put some miles on it. congrats.

  2. I spent this winter welding some m***ive rust on a 1968 Volvo, but now I am back with the 56 Ford.

I had some small problems like a water leak and a gummed up fuel pump, at first. The 272 was difficult to start and the Fordomatic gave some strange noises, but after a few miles of test drive everything runs smoothly. I guess I lucked out on this used engine. Idles nicely, smooth shifts.

I have a number of small issues to work out. Headlights died, and return spring on the firewall linkage is too weak. I would like to drive it as much as possible this summer, and work on the interior with carpet and headliner the coming winter.

A test drive in the countryside this evening. A car like rhis really fits roads like these.

If the accelrator seems weak find a smaller diameter spring and put it inside the existing one to see if this helps, rather just a heavier spring.
Happy to hear it's moving well! It looks nice there.

    Deutscher and down-the-road like this.
  4. That sounds like a smart solution, I will look into that.

I am also a bit worried over how dry the heads seemed to be. I will make a tool to press grease into the the oil p***ages and hopefully clear them. I have no idea how much fresh oil there should be around the valve area of a fresh Y-block. Mine are kind of dry, but I see no abnormal wear. It cant hurt to try it.
