Projects Channelled Model A roadster with mercruiser

A 470 is what have in my roadster with a boss head! Did you make that intake? I took my injector off, now has a Autolite inline but I am thinking of running a Holley. I my also gathering parts to make another roadster with a Mercruiser 181.

 

Not mine - just a fan of the Merc/Boss.

 

As I post more of the build, I’ll be including those pix.

 

Now that looks serious! Do you know which Mercruiser it is?

 

They are referred to mostly as 470's but there are lots of numbers for them. Used '76 to '86 ish. Some boats had twins some single engine. Ford even had the block in their Muscle Parts catalog in the day.

I should say they are 224 ci but everybody bores and strokes them. The blocks are aluminum but in stock form they use a iron 460 head. That one in my car is 242 ci, but the spare is 258 ci. They are quite a bit bigger than the 181!

 

I wonder who was sitting around with a broken boat motor and a Boss 429 head and went "Hmmmmm I wonder....."?

 

The ‘blue painted steel’ is actually the old aluminium mechanical injection manifold I used. It has marking blue on it while I angle milled it for the manifold flange plate which I made to suit the Mercruiser port spacing. There is another photo there of the mani and plate mocked up before I welder it.

 

Do you have a picture of the carb & manifold?

My previous build was a smooth shaven A roadster pickup, and I definitely didn’t want to go that way again. It needs a couple of louvres. I’ve welded a small flange on the inside of the ch***is rail so the belly pan is 1/4” above the bottom of the rail, to hide the edge. A good friend let me use his louvre press and showed me the best way to approach it. After over 600 louvres it looks like a roadster should.

 

I cant remember where I saw your roadster first, but I've got to admit..... Im secretly in love with it!
The way you've done the front axle answers a few question about a similar ideas I've had floating in the back of my head for a long while now. Awesome Car mate!

With that many louvres, I thought it best to powdercoat them. No rubbing out and tougher for all the rocks that will be tossed at it.
That’s a boat scoop for the heat in the pan from the muffler and pipes.

Fabricating that belly pan must have taken some huge effort...............let alone the mechanical obstacles to traverse

I thought I would add this pic I took when you had your roadster on show (I hope you don't mind). Like I commented earlier, your car made me stop and spend time looking and scratching my head. I didn't get the exhaust until I saw this thread and seeing the engine.

This has been an awesome thread to read. That belly pan is super nice under that awesome hot rod.

 

Even if it doesn't have any low end ....it looks cool standing still.

 

That belly pan is a work of art. Whats your professional background?

The belly pans took a couple of months of figuring out, sump above the rails, clearance for the rear rad rods, how to run the exhaust, and get some air in there, oil changes etc.
But they were worth it.
