Hot Rods 33-34 Ford Coupe Photo Thread

Heres mine in Japan. Built in the early 70s with some 70s sins. Rougher than the pic looks.

 

It was 1960. "The Bakersfield Smokers, with fuel insurance in hand, scheduled their soon to be famous Fuel Championships meet," Don Montgomery said. "Gene took the fenders off of his coupe, added a blower, and proceeded to thrill the crowds with great, tire smoking, runs down the strip." The coupe, now Mooneyham & Sharp, took the win in at the second March Meet in A Fuel Coupe with 10.44 and 148.27 mph, good enough for a new Drag News 1320 record. Al Sharp's blown Chrysler engine really upped the car's speed big time and they were quicker by about half a second, too.

Back when we were visiting a friend in the new housing development called LAKEWOOD CITY, it was an interesting time. All of the streets were laid out and the area had new homes that looked alike. Little to no trees and lots of activity with new families moving in and out of empty homes. But, it was the latest version of a huge community of tract homes.

For us, one street looked the same as the other. In thinking back, our old westside of Long Beach community had rectangular blocks and they were lettered from A to G. but, by the time we moved there in 1953, it looked old and lived-in. this new development looked like a monopoly set with blank faces of all of the new houses… it was a little eerie.

Our next door neighbor for 4 years moved to the new development. a good friend from the next block over also moved away after living in our Westside community for 5 years. So, a brand new housing development drew a lot of folks to move into new homes, in new area close to Long Beach.


No, that is not my 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery in the background. When we visited a friend that lived around the corner, we saw the coupe and were in my 1958 black Impala.

It was a surprise to drive around the corner and see the Ford coupe sitting in the driveway and on another time, in the garage. Lakewood was one of the first “planned” communities in So Cal.

Our first encounter with the silver Mooneyham-Sharp Ford Coupe was in 1960 at Bakersfield Smokers March Meet. It sounded as fast as it was on the dragstrip. The black bantam had no chance in this race.
