I absoluetly loved the illustrators work from back in the day, They were able to make the car look faster than they were in the showroom, I would love to see it make a come back. HRP

 

A great place to see some of the original art up close is Carl's Car World in Eureka, CA.
The amount of renderings they have is really impressive not to mention they have several factory clay styling models from Packard, Lincoln, and some others.

The best part of the artwork is how they made the vehicle seem larger by rendering the people smaller in some of those ads. The artists always seemed to take a few creative liberties in that regard. But the artwork was always interesting to study and enjoy!

Once again, long, low, beautiful.

 

As a youngster Collected the National Geographic publications for the very reasons mentioned, while it was seldom if ever that a Ford made the print it was certain to attract the potential Lincoln or other high end perspective buyers, most always with a lower stance &/or lowered roof line as mentioned, to depict a sleeker faster offering.

Ah yes back when I was a teenager someone gave us National Geographic magazines from the 50's and I proceeded to cannabalize them by tearing/cutting out all of the old automotive ads! Came across them the other day and was debating on recycling them. For the life of me at this point I can't remember if I saved them for my car collecting nephew, but I did just send him about 30 of my old license plates for his garage wall. I put notes of the cars they were on that I changed when I was a kid. Also sent him a couple of old gas station maps to hang.

 

Fascinating subject. I have a framed Pontiac ad from "Life Magazine", nothing special but I love the image, found it when I had my '62 Pontiac Catalina. Very cool to learn about the background on how these ads came to be.
Wonder if your guy Will Davies was involved in this one?

As a kid growing up in the 70s, I loved the stylized art from the 50s and 60s. Wanted to be an architect, but it wasn’t in the cards. It brings back a lot of memories, and the dreams of a utopian future with flying cars. Lol! It must have been such a special time to experience this level of creativity first hand.

 

Lately I have been posting car advertising art in the Vintage shots from days gone by thread. Dodge, De Soto, Ford, Plymouth, and other manufacturers. The one thing I have just noticed is that there is no artist signature, not credit given to art seen by millions. Now after seeing this thread, I realize that I missed the major reason the cars draw attention...
Thanks for pointing it out.

 

I guess by the sounds of it there'd be a dozen signatures on the image...the other thing is in the big corporations anything an employee does is theirs...in smaller businesses such as Hotrod art that are one man/woman shows they many times do sign their work...
