The '51 Ford wagon has a door lock that looks like a F100 and uses a square bar like the older cars. 1. Does anyone know if the door lock square bar and spring to hold the bar in place are reproduced? 2. Does anyone know how long the bar needs to be for a '51 Wagon door. Without the car here I'm thinking 6" and cut to fit. If I need to make the square bar should I go with tool steel (W1) or something else.
- I have never seen any replacements advertised but I have never really looked for any either. This is a NOS one I have. The shaft is .190 square (3/16) and 4 1/2" long. As in your picture, the markings on the shaft are cut marks for the different length requirements for different vehicles. The spring is tapered and measures 11/16 long, 1/4 on the small end and 3/8 on the large end... I would think someone would have a junk lock cylinder with the shaft still on it. If push comes to shove I could send you an old one I have for you to copy. I have the lock it fits on so I would need it back for the lock cylinder I have.....
Thanks for the offer. I did get a used one at LARS and we have another good swap meet coming up, so I do have a spring and a too short bar. I did look and didn't see anything, I was just wondering if they where made somewhere aftermarket that I missed. The tapered spring is proving difficult to find the exact same one, some places will custom make a spring which I would ***ume is in m*** quan***y or very high price. The bar is 3/16" and I did find machinable tool steel at McMaster Carr. Closest springs: https://www.thespringstore.com/pcc015-250-359-11000-mw-0630-c-n-in.html Wire diameter too thin. Mine is .026
No problem. Glad you found the shaft anyway. Seems like if someone took them apart at some point the spring is always missing. If the wire size is too small I think the spring would tend to slide up over the shaft where the small end sits..... there isn't much that holds it there.
