In keeping with the forum's ***le, here's a hokey one that I finished last week. This build is result of my self-challenge of what I could throw together in a few days. The main purpose was to use up leftover and junk parts...and do it in a hurry. It's something kind of hokey that might have been used in a beach party teen movie from the mid 1960s. Here we have my automotive ADD on full display as I jump from one kit to the next. The 4 door body is from Drag City Casting and will get a blown flathead. The '37 tub is made from a 2 door slantback with a '36 cowl top. It will have a carson top and Duvall style windshield.
I got this kit from a friend after I complained I never saw any Thunderbolt kits for sale. 19 years old and I was worried about the decals, and it turns out rightfully so. One of the first things I did was scan the decal sheet just in case, and then gave the sheet a coat of TS-13 clearcoat.. I painted it and then started on decals. The decals held together fine, but I had a lot of trouble with the decals releasing from the paper, taking 4-5 minutes to release. 2 decals were a problem, the Thunderbolt and the blue decal on the front fender. They are the ones that had to conform to the rounded fender. With a lot of Micro-Sol I finally got them on right. I also noticed on a couple of the small decals that they didn't seem to be "sticking" very well. I got all the decals done and applied the clear coat, TS-13. Rubbed the clear out being careful on the decals and everything seemed fine. Then I started on the BMF which was a lengthy process. After a few hours of work I noticed that just habdling the body that those decals were crumbling. My guess is that they weren't sticking . I printed out the decals with the hope that I could apply at least partial decals in the troubled area. But the inkjet decals are not dark enough to show on the dark paint. So after 2 months of work and a lot of hours I have a mess. Luckily I build for my enjoyment and do not compete in shows and I guess I can live with it as it is.
