Good evening all, no work done tonight on the car unfortunately, but I figured id make a post for some inspiration... The car now has some cheapy 39 Ford tear drop tail lights that I am not particularly fond of, the rear has been bobbed to match better with the channel job, looking for ideas or recommendations on tail lights. My first thought was a chrome 2" - 3" nerf bar with '39 Chev tail lights on each end, figured itd be a good way to hide the filler panel under the deck lid... feel free to share ideas!
Another update after doing lame adult stuff... Had some time to myself tonight and decided to play around with the headers, after a few tries I finally ended up with this, its ugly right now but trust the process, the primary tubes will be wrapped and the 3.5 cone will stay chrome. Also fabricated a column mount, forgot to take a pic but its basic.
You know the drill... got the drivers side header welded up and ready for grinding and wrap. P***enger side is tacked up and fitted. Clutch kit finally came in along with the starter mounting kit I was missing with the ****ter shield... hydraulic clutch slave is here aswell, pretty trick unit for the money. Currently waiting on a odd size bearing for my column to start working on getting the steering together, atleast from column to corvair box... but its coming along well! My plan is to make it to both the Rockabillaque-florida show in Immokalee in November, aswell as the Daytona Rod Run on Thanksgiving weekend. Cross ya fingers!
Thank you! Recently got settled at my new place, bought property in an air park, 55x55 air plane hanger works great as a shop.
Tonight's update! Got my bearing delivered and got my column chopped down to a workable size, I need to remember to take more pictures while im doing this stuff, but anywhooo, it worked great, conveyor belt bearing lol. Also got the p***enger side header welded fully and ground back, then started to play with the clutch pedal. As I said before the clutch pedal and master cylinder is a one-piece dealio made by Wilwood, which of course I know isn't traditional, just what I have to work with in the room Im allotted. But everything is coming right along, next is getting the frame rail holes welded up since it looks like Swiss cheese, and the firewall filled. Then its onto front suspension when my '32 drop cross member comes in.
Update! Crossmember came in so time to get to work! Started to un-swiss cheese the frame rails and get everything cleaned back before I start chopping, then decided after a few hours to stop for a moment and watch the sun go down, really solid Friday night.
Got the 32 cross member all welded in and chopped off all the IFS junk, using a '55 Ford F100? Axle as mock up, something I picked up for cheap randomly one day.
Love the build man! I will be running 49 lincoln tail lights on my 33. Its also gonna be running a 1950 olds 303, 36 packard trans, 52 olds rear
Getting the frame rails and firewall cleaned and filled, got the column put where I want it, now onto working on mounting the corvair box.
Quick update tonight, got the steering box mounted to inside of frame rail, triangulated gussets should be more than enough, then shoved the engine back in to verify fitment with everything around the steering box, also built a shifter for the A833, needs to be finished up but it works.
Been a while, life gets in the way, got the steering pretty much finished up, built a shifter for the A833, went and picked up my 4" drop axle, not the Drilled I beam that I want but it will do fine for now, figured a janky mock up pic would be cool.
Man this thing is cool, oil pan clearance is fine, might do something with the ****tershield flange...
Here's a quicky. Played around and got my new radius rods on and started playing around for caster angle, and of course I dont have any 5/8 fine thread jam nuts lying around so off to the store I go... and just to make sure before I buy a new brake kit, these are the chevy style spindles right?
yes those look like Chevy spindles, but I would check the bearing ID's before you buy. The spindles may have been machined to fit those OE type rotors that are on it. Are you planning to move the tie rod behind the axle?
Yes, the tie rod will be moved behind the axle, the arms are mounted incorrectly to the spindles. I will check on bearing sizes today when I can.
A buddy of mine had it stored in a shipping container for years, he finally decided to sell it and I couldn't p*** on the offer, it's a 1938 business coupe, has a 292 i6 and auto currently, will be getting one of my tri-power 327s and an overdrive manual. Will be built as a late 50s Hotrod.
Hey just a few things for you. First off, thanks for posting this up - definitely appreciate you taking the time to share the progress. I'd suggest you do as RMR&C suggests and put the tie rod behind the axle. Pretty difficult to have any Ackerman angle without doing so. I know the AI photo thing is a bit of a PITA but they sometimes stumble on some good stuff. I like the mashup and think it's worth looking at the cars side by side by side. Cheers and keep up the good work.
Project pretty much stalled since I am waiting on parts to arrive, ordered a radiator and grill shell, front shock mount kit, and some other little things, gotta finish up grinding the welds on the frame and firewall, guess Ill yank the motor back out tonight, radius rods are now mounted and got myself about 6° of caster. Gotta bend the pitman arm a bit for it to clear...
Call it sacrilege, call it cool, call your mother. I decided on a '32 Ford shell instead of the Plymouth/Dodge style shell, I would much rather a steel shell over gl***, and a steel '33 shell is way out of budget, front brakes just came in aswell, waiting patiently for shock mounts so I can get the front half of the car finished up. Used AI to throw primer on the car, trying to figure out how I should split the firewall, just to the edge of the firewall or halfway up the cowl where the original hood seal would've been?
Got the firewall and cowl cleaned up and shot in primer, while I was sanding I found that they filled this little hood rod pocket with filler, decided to show it off rather than patch is smooth, then fitted the radiator and grill shell, started working on headlight location, gotta move them outboard a bit but its starting to look like a car.
