Technical Best material for making interior door panels

I have the patterns made and now I need to purchase the material for the door panels. I will be gluing fabric an then and want to buy the right thing. Thanks for the help. Joe

Restoration Specialties 814-467-9842 has what is listed as Door Panel Material, PN #300 and #300L. Its description is "tan waterproof door panel material 3/32" thick sheets". The #300 is 32"x48" and the 300L is 39"x65". If you do get the panel material from Restoration, ask for a catalog, it had everything you need for an interior!

 

Cowl Board.

 

Lots of upholsters use wood. Often luan plywood or baltic birch plywood. Some are using ABS board but I have seen a few who say if the car is going to be in really hot conditions not to use it because it can warp from the heat.

 

I used this stuff that I cut painstakingly with a xacto knife. Then I realized on the last piece that tin snips work great hahaha

then just stapled material to it and it came out pretty good.

I'm about to do it again but the stuff I bought is no longer available

Aluminum

 

I get .032 stucco embossed aluminum sheets at work. Excellent for door cards and inner panels. Wipe with alcohol to get oils off then drill, bore, glue, whatever. Must be fastened well though so they don't rattle!

 

While I haven't tried it, I think 1/8" thick lexan would work good. You can see through it to see exactly where all the mounting clip holes are and you can glue on top of it. I'm a cheapskate and got free discarded transit bus advertising board to use.

 

I would be very surprised if contact adhesive would adhere to lexan which would mean it won't be much use for upholstery work.

 

Masonite. The 3W done in 70 still has the panels done at that time. I use panel clips to fasten them to the doors. No exposed fasteners. The trimmer sewed thru them for decorative trim. They don’t rattle and can be fitted to the doors compound shape. They probbably ad some insulation also.

 

4X8 sheet of luan plywood from Lowes for most of my flat panels. Gallon of vinyl top adhesive from eBay to glue it on and staple from the back. Used panel clips from a Mustang interior to attach so no exposed screws. Worked out pretty good

 

Expanded pvc foam board works well for me. Cut it with aviation snips.

use abs panelboard. use a doublecutter sheetmetal shear to cut them out. use thin chipboard or beer boxes and spray glue to make your patterns.. use clecos to attch the finished abs boards to your car, then size up each hole hole to the auveeco japan clip size , i forgrt which part number on that one.. once all the clips are sorted and the panel is fitted.. cover to taste. The waterboard black stuff warps and the masonite is not as easy to work with, plus takes on moisture. The abs is stable in all enviorns, thats why we plumb with it etc.

 

Black 1/8 PVC is great. Last forever cuts easy. If you need a bend heat gun will warm it enough.

No panels. I glue/affix stiff-backed indoor/outdoor carpeting directly to the door frame. Comes in many shades/colors.
