Can't belive Street Rodder is now taking in 50s and 60 cars.
Not that I'm against it, I think it's great! It just seems I remember them saying a few years back that they would never do it.

But the 2 cars they have in there to kicks things off are a really sweet pair.

I think maybe they see the sucess of Goodguys and want a piece of the pie. But what ever the reason I say way to go.

I never understood the '48 cut-off, and back in the day, they always had the "Across 49th Street" column. For me personally, I like cars up to about 70, maybe 71 or 72, depending on the car, but not much after that.

That's where the advertising dollars are. They probably just quadrupled their value to their banker.

I think that it depends on how old you are. Some people don't look at 60's and 70's cars as old.

Probably going to lose a bunch of subscribers since Custom Rodder is going away...so the suits decided to try to pacify them...wont' work for me.

60's and 70's car aren't that old...I had several back then...

Custom Rodder used tobe my favorite magazine, bar none.
Bill Hines was in almost every month.

Then, for some reason,it "evolved" into mostly custom wheels
on a restored "classics",not much cutting and welding.

Now the Bean Counters have killed it off completely,
and will try to take Street Rodder down next.

    Prime Media/Emap sucks.

Custom Rodder was one hell of a magazine, when it made it's return. What was that? 1992 or something? It turned pretty boring lately, resto cars with big wheels aren't customs.

    I'll still read it

  10. Trying to be everything to everyone is a good way to mess up a decent magazine (or damn-near anything else for that matter).

I'd thumb through a Custom Rodder occasionally hoping to see something that turned me on. A chopped '67 Impala just makes me sick though. Admittedly, I'm not a big custom fan.....

It is interesting to note the increased interest in later cars with the attention to detail that has (usually) been reserved for street rods. Many "big name" builders are doing more '50's & '60's stuff now. Alloway's shop is full of "late models". Even Kennedy's shop, in BFE TN, is stacked neck deep in mid-year Vettes slated for C-6 suspensions & LS-1 engines....

The magazine has been around 35 YEARS- they just moved up the cut-off date of cars to be features 10-15 YEARS- do the math!

35 Years ago a 62 Impala was just a used car- totally different today.

49 was a major change in the auto industry as a whole. Engineering and styling of all the manufactures was up dated in 1949.

  13. So whats next NSRA will ban the 1948 limit also wow now that would be different ............

This was carry over from the war (WWII). Most of the car designs were the same from '42-'48. During the war, auto production was switched over for the war effort. When the war was over in '45, it took several years to re-tool for the cars that were built in '49. So that is why they built, basically the '42 design until '48.

CUSTOM RODDER was a great mag under Rob's direction, and I enjoyed every issue for a while there. It was a perfect blend of interesting feature cars, tech articles, events coverage and new products.

STREET RODDER was great mag under Tom Vogele as well. In the pre-Brennan era, the magazine delivered unmatched quality and content headed by a hands-on hot rodder.

That was then...and although "then" was a relatively short time ago, it's still in the past a few pages. Now, CUSTOM RODDER has been put to rest (once more) and STREET RODDER has softened into LAWNCHAIR MONTHLY since Double-B took the helm, so it only stands to reason that the Brass would sweep the crumbs left over from CUSTOM RODDER under the modern STREET RODDER rug.

Kinda sad...maybe even pathetic...but not a shock by any means.

    Next?

What? Custom Rodder is going away? One of their folks is supposed to be forwarding my email to the folks with the '59 Cadillac with the Northstar in it that's supposed to be in the January issue!

I had a subcription from '76 to around '80. I gave up on them when the pastel pussy rods came out. Back in the ealy days they featured many year models. I still have the issue with the Corvette on the cover.

Face it the older crowd is dying off there switching gears trying to cover more of the market.
The only way I buy mags anymore are issue to issue. I will find one issue great and about four or five complete trash not worth looking at or pretty much a photo copy of the same cars in anothe rmagazine. I jump around from OleSkoolrodz, Custom Rodder, classic trucks and CK deluxe.
    There all pretty discouraging

    Oh well - I really don't care.

For my time and enjoyment, I'd take reading the HAMB daily over any of the hot rod mags being published today.

Sites like this are the future - paper magazines are as good as gone....that model is a dying entity.

I couldn't disagree with you more.

If you think of trying to print a rag that will have somthing in it for everybody, I don't see how you could do better than SRM.

And there are few cats out there that live the car life more than BB. He is a straight up car nut.

Agreed, I haven't met him in person but have chatted with Brian via email quite a bit as he was preparing my little Katrina piece he ran last Feb, seems to be a genuine car nut and nice guy, and he has a slick 29 roadster to boot. Maybe it will mean less billet laden, 6 figure 30s and 40s cars which would be cool by me.

Some of us still think of '50s cars as Late Models.

Oh my gosh! Is that your car that was thrown all over the shop and turned on it's side? What a mess that was! I was glad to read that your going back together, and that you'd bought a 37 to drive in the mean time.

If I remember right, your house was on higher ground, and in better shape?

And don't forget is Zipper Lakester, but from what I've heard Mrs. B has taken most of the driving time in it. =)

Yea, that was me. I've had the 37 for about 10 years though, any other time it would have been right next to my roadster and would have got wacked too, but I had moved it to another garage, as I had a buddy's 41 chevy truck in my shop for some work. So it got wasted instead, but fortunately was insured.

Thats right, I remember that now. You'll have to come up with a cute name for that roadster.... lets see: Determianation, Fordatude, Rodsteration, secound time around, or maybe just Kathy! Either way just remember bad things happen to good people. =)
