Stripper glitter aka Divorce dust

 

Good one! Logging that away for future reference.

I’m masked off for the red stripes. That took a few hours.
Afternoon sun heating up the shop and I need a break. I have high temp reducer and the shop shouldn’t exceed 89 today. I’ll go out around 5:00 and shoot the red candy.

I shut the doors so the sun doesn’t mess with my masking tape. Time for a refreshment.

Oh yeah. Needs a little detail work, then clear em. They are 2D but have some movement

Are you going to do any shading or highlighting? Looking good so far!

 

I don’t know how, not that this has stopped me ever. Just costs me more money. Do they make transparent black or do you just tint clear with black base?

I have some clean up to do. I had a bleed through between the red and blue on one side. Not a big area. I also had a lift occur when removing the mask. It is an area I had trouble with and the paint built up. My mistake. Have to fix it now. Blending candy, not what I wanted to experience. I’ll know more tomorrow and share. It’s close. I’m pretty happy with it. Just not as tight as I wanted and you know I set a high bar. Hmmm. Bar time.

 

As Mark said blending a candy is very, very difficult because the all areas already painted will get darker with every additional coat so you will have a dark spot where the new and old meet.

 

Yea, candies are VERY tough to blend. And, as far as shading and highlighting, I have just mixed black or white very thin as a base to do that with an airbrush. But, about as easy to screw up as make better too.

 

Depending on where the flaw is, it might be a good excuse to learn adding some drop shadows or highlighting. As Mark said, avoid trying to blend the candy. It’s a tough task.

 

If Bob Hill was still alive he could probably walk you through blending the candy. He could repair candy paint and not have the repair show.

Might be wise to intercoat with clear, seal in your candies. Wouldn't think you would have to add black to your clear, just thin down the black base in an air brush. Won't take much black to make a shadow.

 

If you're serious about doing shadows, don't' thin regular black, try to find a transparent black, and thin it. Easier and doesn't make tiny spatters like regular black.

reminds me of the Gottlieb "spirit of 76" pinball cabinet I restored and painted sone weeks ago.

 

Just go for it. You've got a vision in your head of what you want. Make it happen. Got faith in you.

 

If you plan to try some shadowing or highlighting, you’d be wise to bury everything you’ve done in clear. Then after a day or so, sand it smooth. Then, when you attempt the shadows, and aren’t happy with them, you can easily wipe it off and start over without harm to the work you’ve done. Once you’ve got it dialed in like you want it, then reclear it again. Yes, you will be adding time and money to the project, but if it keeps you from messing up what you’ve already done, it could save your bacon.

 

One panel the flaw is almost small enough to hide like that, the other side is going to take some work.

I have a couple of ideas. I will take pics and show my progress. I think I will let it sit today as I formulate a plan

I was always told that bravery is not walking into the path of an oncoming train. That's just stupid. Sometimes I feel like I am wandering down the tracks.

I was taught that for every dark area there is a light area, ying/yang thing.

If I shade the panels I hve to be careful not to bury my metal flake. That worries me

This is an excellent suggestion. I soooo hate wet sanding these panels but it beats making an error and screwing it all up!

 

I too have my own washer to keep my wife's machine free from my questionable decisions.

 

A simple way to keep your marriage happy. That and hide your swap meet money!

Evidently, I can’t blend candies. This is some bill ****!

 

So,
@Moriarity called today just after I got home from the doctor and bending a day off from the garage but NO! Apparently, not only can’t you blend candies but you also can’t sand them!

That meant my 24 hour window was ticking. So I changed into my Shop clothes and got busy. I saved one area and ended up with a nice panel but the other side went from bad to worse.

I ended up removing the blue star field and one of the stripes and a portion of another. You all are correct, blending don’t work!!!!

I am thumbing this update while I wait for my panel clear to tack so I can apply another coat or two. Then I get to mark back off the stars and that missing stripe. Fun, fun.

 

This side is done for all intents and purposes. Maybe a touch up before final clear, but it is good to go.

this side had issues so I removed them. Since I had used hardened clear over my flake I was able to remove the affected areas with reducer and effort, 2:1 (2 parts effort and one part reducer). I used panel clear to set what I had and allow me to scuff, Re apply the graphics and then clear again.

this beat sanding and re applying flake. I can barely make out my stripes as the red candy dyed the panel slightly. That will make laying out my design easier.

Note to self, you can’t blend candies! (Going to get that tattooed on my shooting arm). Thanks Mark for the gentle nudge this morning to get after it. It could have been worse.
