Yeah, there wasn’t much of choice here, I don’t like “kinda nice”. I’ll get back after it tomorrow and get those stars laid back down.

I’m the meantime, the finished panel will get moved to another garage. I got this.

I put three coats of panel clear (shop line J105). I’ll scuff that before applying the graphics again.

Temp dropped this evening, rain moved in. Switched to mid temp reducer. Laying down nice. Cleaned out my clear gun. Time for dinner and shut eye.

 

Yeah, I learned that. I mean maybe some highlighting and shading? Usually when you see that it isn’t on a metal flake background so the jury is out.

what do you think of some light air brush work on the flag. Some 3D effects?

For future reference . . . If you need to extend your 24hr BC window. You can put down a light coat of intercoat or color blender. This gives you another 24hrs, to complete the work.

If you want to protect candys/pearls/metallics. And come back after 24hrs to finish BC graphics. You can put down two light coats or a medium wet coat of intercoat/color blender. This gives you a surface that you can lightly scuff (scotchbrite).

You can also use intercoat/color blender. To seal your tape edges prior to spraying your graphics. Not spraying the first "color " coat or two, full on wet, can also help.

When you are pulling the fine line tape. Make sure you are pulling it back on its self, at a sharp angle.

 

So….. what do the panels go to? Car, motor cycle, boat, airplane, dirigible, or go-kart?

Lol...I had a lady pull out in front of me one time and messed up a flame job on my pickup. When all said and done, I was able to pay off my wife's wedding ring that I still owed on. Pretty sure the the other insurance company was a little surprised how much custom paint costed and how few people are willing to even try it.

 

Excellent tips! I am just learning about the uses of intercoat clear. Easy to use and a forever pot life. I was so careful pulling up the fine line tape but the problem I think was all the movement in my stripes made pulling just one at a time practically impossible. Some of the lines were over the top of others so pulling them back on themselves doesnt work all the time. That's when I got problems.

Here is one I "saved". The tape pulled the top of this stripe off. It was the only flaw in the entire panel and I figured I wasn't out anything to try a repair. Like Mark said, you can't blend candies, but you can shoot another "stripe". You can see the exposed area, this is at the bottom of the panel (it is hanging upside down). That is the nadir of that stripe.

Some crafty taping and painting produced a nearly flawless repair.

I tried that on the other side, but the spot was in the middle of the panel and the center of a stripe, and the color was not even close when I pulled the mask. Plus, I had that bleed through on my blue field that I wasn't going to be happy with. I hated wiping away all that work but sometimes there is just no other option than a fresh slate. The hardened clear I applied over the flake saved my ***!

I learned that lesson years ago and I developed a deep respect for painters and body men. I was quoted over 50k for the body and paint on my 41 pickup. After 2 years of work/bood/sweat/materials/etc, I could have paid the 50k, let someone else do it, get a job at McDonalds and came out far ahead. But where's the fun in that?

I like your paint-timer - a short gl***full consumed. New thread for instructions for those who rarely drink? Does sound like a method useful for "Don't care(right at the moment - maybe later though...) & dumping Jitters... ;D .

I used to smoke, not often, a pack would last a week unless I was painting a car...or golfing They were my timer between coats. The other day I was updating my thread between coats. I need something to keep me from rushing the clock but no so captivating that I forget what I was doing.

I pressure washed the back patio where I sit between coats as it was covered in metal flake that I tracked out of the shop. That stuff went everywhere! I still have the mess on the shop floor to worry about, but it can wait till I wrap up this paint project. I need to stay on it to be done by the big 250th!

Stripes back on. Intermediate clear over it.

working on the blue bit now while I’m inside my 24 hours. Then I’ll clear that as well. Mrs Bandit helped cut out stars earlier. That is a tedious job. Blue is sprayed, waiting an hour before removing the star masking and I’ll clear that area.

I'm tired of cleaning my paint gun. I feel like one of those marines you see in the movies stripping and ***embling his firearm blind folded.

I’ve been using one of my door jamb guns (1.3) for the candy base colors. My Iwata for the clear.

 

And done. Ready to scuff and sand booth panels.

Seriously, how does the flake get everywhere??? Seems to me to be almost lighter-than-air, when I saw it in the jars, but I thought ~1tables**** to a paint cup(*IN* the paint cup - mixed w/paint, sprayed) was the "normal" amt? IDK, just from what I've been told, by a couple of ex-painters, that had some flake for sale awhile back.
Do you blow it on dry, sorta sprinkling it on in a dusting fashion over the panel(s) while the paint is wet? In the distant past, I saw a pic of a Roth-Flake gun that did just that.
Or does the flake/paint dry that fast???

Last time(s) I painted - a looong time ago, I had trouble w/the aerosolled paint sticking to everything else(including me...), in addition to the car - sorta like loose cat hair in the house... . (Thought about using my cats' feet to make paw-prints over the white racing stripes, but didn't want to hurt the cat, so no-go). (In retrospect, I shoulda used a bunch of cat-hair lightly sprinkled evenly over the stripes, probably better than the veiling technique - which I couldn't do, & just burying it all in some clear).

There are numerous ways to apply flake that I have researched (google). There is a dry cast method where you wet the panel with clear and, as the name implies, strew flakes by hand or machine. I watched a video on this method, and it looked ridiculous, the guy was using a dry flake thrower (Roth gun) to throw huge flakes on a boat. Perhaps they were too big for any other method. You actually screw the Roth 2 ounce flake jar to the gun and let it fly.

I used an intermediate clear (Shop Line J105 mixed 1 to 1 with JR507 slow reducer) and added 2 tables****s of .015 flake to a sprayable quart. I tried and failed miserably to use my HVLP primer gun (2.5 nozzle). The flakes clogged the gun instantly. Since I made a trophy out of my old siphon cup gun last year for Lloyd Fest III, I had to buy one. I found a new 2.0 nozzle siphon cup gun on Amazon for $30 that was delivered overnight (how do they do that?). I poured the mix into the cup, added 4 new 1/2 nuts that I soaked in reducer over night to the cup for agitation (not mine but the flake). I had the fan pattern opened up to max, the fluid control maxed and the air pressure at 25-30. It takes a bit of air I found to pick up the flake. I applied it in varying patterns (straight with a 50% overlap, then diagonals) to avoid tiger stripes and uneven distribution of the flakes. @Moriarity suggested using baby flakes (.08) and in retrospect I should have listened to him. The coverage would have been better, the application easier and the effect a bit more dynamic. I thought if little is good, bigger is better. Works with engines.

This results in blowing metal flake and clear all over the place. I had cardboard down under the spray area and it caught the majority of the wet stuff. A bit fell beyond the cardboard in an area about 3 feet from the panels. The now dry flakes I tracked all over, to the workbench/bathroom/patio...you name it. It was on my clothes, in my hair, it doesn't take much glitter to make a mess. I only added 2 tables****s! If you ever want to know what it looks like when a fairy explodes look at my shop.

I looked at the Roth gun, gravity feed (I don't know how they do that), 3.0 nozzle on the big one. I read the reviews and they said they were impossible to clean and practically a throw away. They aren't expensive $100. That Roth dry flake thrower gun is $150.

As for the dry time, the intermediate clear has a 5-10 recoat time and a 30-minute topcoat so it dries fast like base coat.

It is cold and wet today, I am going to have to warm my shop a bit before I spray them. I also need to scuff them prior as I have exceeded my 24 hour time on the first panel and most of the second one. I will have them done today but pictures in the sun? This is the PNW buddy! You won't get a sunny pic till next Friday.

Funny, that is what wife says quite often. It wouldn't have helped. I have a listening problem more than a hearing problem.

My logic (there was some reasoning applied) was that the car has a ton of big flake in the paint. Thus the side panels needed to match (the flake not the color). In retrospect (I hate retrospect) I should have listened to you. I am happy with the look but I keep wondering what it would have looked like with the baby flakes.

 

Is the blue, "American Flag Blue," and if so shouldn't it have more of a green tinge? Asking for a friend.

 

Rude! Funny, but rude. I did think about that quite a few times, ordering the paint, spraying it, wiping it back off, remasking, repainting. Yeah, a constant chuckle. Surprised your the first to mention it.

 

Clear on. I used a sprayable quart of Shop Line JC830 with JH 8380 mid temp hardener; it can be reduced but I chose to forgo that due to the low temp in my shop. Not a real expensive clear but still very durable. This will have to do for now Mark until the sun shines again. View attachment 752791
