Projects 1935 Ford 5W Coupe Project NZ - The Sows Ear.

FLOOR IT: The good lads at Deluxe Speed & Custom Facebook have made a start on the Sows Ear and first steps are getting the United Pacific floor in place and aligned and Kleco-ed together, then get the replacement front cowl 1/4 panels fitted for a good front body position reference, then cut off the 39/40 tool tray and fit the EMS 36 rear floor pan extension section in and fit up the rear spare wheel mount structure for a rear reference point for the body. Stay tuned.

BODY PROGRESS : The Deluxe Speed & Custom boys are making further progress on the Sows Ear, the body has been re-braced and its back sitting over the new floors that are loosely ***embled for further alignment as the body takes shape. Getting the replacement sedan doors solidly hung and swinging and latching will be the next big milestone.

 

Love me a 35-36 Five Window, my buddy and fellow club member Steve moved to NZ over a year ago, he will be on HotRod Revue in a couple of weeks, I wonder if yall know the same people? He has a 32 Roadster, Model A roadster, 67 Mustang and a old Harley.

 

NO DOUBT ABOUT IT : @ChuckleHead_Al Its a pretty small Hot Rod Community down here and most people know most people or know of them, I will have a look out for the Video, Hot Rod Revue did a video on my Roadster 12 years ago and the link is in my signature but seems to be broken now, Cheers John.

 

THE DOORS : Jake and Justin have been getting after it and have now got the Jim Morrisons firmly attached. They are hung and swinging but there is still some more work to be done yet to get everything latching and gapped. With not a lot of lower body structure locked in there’s still some challenges to overcome until everything is peachy. But she’s progressing along nicely, I expect to have enough material to make a small Chinese car out of the rust cutouts by the time old girls done.

 

PROGRESSING ALONG: The Deluxe team have the Sedan doors fitting the Coupe and door gaps looking pretty damn close, door tops trimmed and closing fully. Today we put the front clip loosely in place with inner fenders, radiator, grill bonnet etc to see how that’s going to situate. Some more fettling to do but progress.

 

I have met Steve and been to his house. We are both in the Whangarei (far North of the North Island).

With regards to the 35-36 spindles, it appears the 36 example has additional spindle nut threads that would accommodate the interchange of hubs one from the other, as mentioned the early drums however were specific to the 35-36 spindle with the longer snout, not sure how the extra spindle length enters the mix.

 

That’s going to be a really nice, solid car when done. Looks like great work going on.

 

No worries. Whatever I can do to help. I have been down and out for the past 6 weeks with a brutal case of shingles so have not been back to inventory the auction part but I’m sure there will be stuff you can use. I have gobs of 36 stuff so feel free to ask for anything you may need.

 

I NEED SOME HELP: Does anyone have a 1935 / 1936 coupe they could take and share some photos of how the B pillar and rear quarter panel tie into the floor pan and sub rail? I would appreciate any photos that show that detail, unfortunately any detail that we are looking for has left the chat and we have nothing to reference.

 

Not the best picture; but show the angle mount on the pillar and the bolt hole for the body mount.

 

I will take some pics as soon as I get home.

 

Found the seat blocked getting decent pictures. But these kinda show how the bracket extends up the inside of the pillar, wraps around the backside, bends out, welds to the subrail, and is further captured by the mount bolt. Isn't clear; but there is formed rib in the piece to stiffen the 90 at the bend.

 

Some more bad pictures of the insides of the quarter. The hose on the r/h side is the rear window drain. Not much to see between the running board & bottom of quarter and nothing visible underneath with the boards in place.

 

QUARTER PANEL: So it looks like there is in the photo above a return that sits above the running board from the quarter panel, but I cant make out if there is another return back up and joined to the floor/rocker panel? Thank you for the photos @RICH B much appreciated.

 

Couple more blindly taken pictures, the 1/4 panel is on the bottom and the sub-rail is on the left side.

The lower edge of the sub-rail has a 90 degree return toward the frame and the lower edge of the 1/4 panel extends inward and is spot welded to the bottom of the sub-rail.
