Wellllll.... The damn flathead had carb issues two weeks ago when I started it, idling high. Smelled like gas. I didn't have time so this morning was the first opportunity to get to it. Fiddled with the carb all morning and finally got it right. Car running better than it ever has. Smooth as hell at 500rpm idle. Drive it local a bit, decide it's fixed, drive it an hour to meet my wife and kid at his baseball tournament. Standing in the parking lot having a beer with coach, look down at the car, rear right drag link is laying on the ground.... Damnit. Sheared bolt thru the leaf spring.

Nothing a rachet strap can't fix! Lol. Strapped it up tight and made it home fine.

Gotta replace the leaf spring bolt and she'll be fine

Finally got the steering box out. It's toast. I have two other boxes I bought about 5 years ago and one is in great shape. Adjusted the sector screw and checked the pull with a spring scale and is smooth and has zero play in the wheel. Then I measured the shaft. Too long so I guess it is out of a 1951 Ford car and won't work. I think the 1951 Ford shaft is longer to accommodate for the built-in turn signal switch. Let me know if I wrong. Anyway, here's some pics of my mess. Sorry for the pics quality.

 

Got lucky. Bolt wasn't sheared, just lost the nut. Managed to finagle it back in and had nuts and washers laying around that worked perfectly. In hindsight that nut has probably been gone a while and I just didn't notice, and the bolt finally wiggled loose enough to drop the bar. Eh well. Car is driving awesome now and got the carb right finally. Cruises like a dream....

 

Today I cleaned a spot off of my work bench to work on my 1950 Ford car steering box. I found the other box I bought 5 years ago and compared the gears/parts from it to my other box I pulled last week. I can actually see the wear on the gears compared to the other the one. The shaft is the same length I need! I took this box apart 3 years ago to (check it out). I should have left it alone. Anyway, I am in the process of cleaning the parts and then re***embly and check. I might get lucky!

 

I opened 2 boxes today that I have been waiting to open. You’ve seen the new gears, wheel and tires, roll cage, and intercooler. My face hurts from smiling. 66mm Garrett turbos.

Do tell about removing the shine away.

 

first I tried aluminum wheel cleaner, the etching kind. it did ok but not great. very splotchy.
then I tried soda blasting but all I have is a gun with soda reservoir that did good for about two square inches before needing to be refilled.
skipped the oven cleaner and went straight to the big gun.
muriatic acid.
painted the exterior with a small brush, let it cook for about five minutes then gave it a bath in a baking soda and water solution.
then back in the ultrasonic cleaner with hot water and dish soap followed by a clean hot water rinse and blow dry with compressed air. and finally gave it all a light coat of WD40.
all this dis***embled of course.
probably would have bead blasted it but my cabinet is full of pretty aggressive aluminum oxide and I wanted it smooth.
I'm sure there are more effective and easier ways and if I ever do it again I may try one.
but I got the finish I was after, a relatively consistent dull medium dark grey not unlike zink.

 

@Paul , those carbs look great. Sort of the same sheen as new Stromberg Carbs. A lot of work to get that look.
Today, we bolted the intercooler to the mounts we had made . Monday we cut the headers and mount some turbos. Until then, enjoy this birds eye view

 

Is mounting new hubcaps technically “working on” something? Regardless, I bought these ‘56 Olds caps off of member Shamus, to replace the original’55 Pontiac caps, and finally got to take the car out of the shop today. Going to take it and actually do deliveries in it today for our pizza restaurant.

 

That counts in my book!

Repurposing a cart again I bought at an auction for a $1. Last purpose was a down and dirty engine test stand.
Now I’ll make a welding cart for MiG, stick and oxy/acetylene maybe put some hangers on for grinders and what not.

Oh I scavenged the tubing from a give away exercise machine. I used a bunch of the 2” tubing on the Dart exhaust.

**** is getting real. The headers that came with the turbo kit had 2 3/4 V band connection. It needed to be 3 inches, and we are ****ing hot rodders so we are changing the output to 3 inches . it sure makes the area look different

 

Is there a target or projected HP on this project? Inquiring minds really want to know.

 

just a lot of small things on the 51 Chevy 2dr Styleline Deluxe I bought... removed the pinstripes . removed some silly
stickers off the gl*** and on the third member.. waiting for the correct out side mirrors... so I can take 69 camaro ones off... knocking the "older " guy stuff of it as I go.. lol

That’s 90 degrees and 80% humidity.
Doesn’t help that I’m welding and not Cali style with flip flops and shorts I have my FR gear on.

My attempt at a firewall.
Pay no attention to the flow checks, I came up with Lacquer and Enamel. I have a lot to learn using this new fangled material.
I was going for the “clueless, backyard builder” look. I’m pretty sure I nailed it.

 

I would say your attempt came out really nice.
