Event Coverage Definitely an Oh S**t! Moment

This popped up on my social media. Hope no one was injured! Poor 56!
“This truck makes wide right turns.” Yep!

 

Unofficial word was the guy tried to go around the truck

 

Where did this happen?

Once saw a Trans Am try to get by a truck that was turning ended up just like that.

 

I hope he ducked!

 

That is awful, I hope the owner of the car got out un****hed but seeing the steering wheel pushed down I fear he had some injuries, I do hope the damages are well covered. HRP

 

As a retired 45 year truck driver, BOTH drivers should have been paying more attention. I have avoided this same scenario several times during my career by doing just that. I hope no one was hurt, but I feel sorry for the Crown. I didn’t know the Crowns came with the cheaper side trim.

 

I hope no one was hurt also but this was definitely a FAAFO moment. I hope he learned a good lesson. Trucks have been turning wide for over a year now and people should know better. But I’m sad a cl***ic car got ruined, even if it is a ford.

 

waste of a good car. had friend in HS that had a hi-performance (silver painted shoebox taped to hood - Ha!) Metropolitan. Tried to p*** a City bus going along curb. Bus was turning right and pushed us against curb to about 45 degrees before stopping. Bus moved over and car dropped down. no real damage to car, so we just drove on. as a side note, my Dad & his brother had a Model T coupe. go too fast (?) around corner it would tip over. once upright again would continue on. Ha! joys of youth

Never saw a Crown Customline before.

 

I agree that both should have been paying a little more attention-I am ***uming that the Ford was trying to be a jerk and scoot around him. I also noticed that the truck did not have turn signals flashing. The reason I noticed this is that happened to me once. Truck was in center (left turn lane) with no signal on. I pulled up to the right to turn right and guess what, he decided to turn right. We did not get hurt but I could not shift fast enough to back up.

Back in the day cl*** one drivers were called professional drivers, well the profession leaves a lot to be desired these days imho. Both drivers are at fault. Self preservation skills are sadly lacking in the world today, everyone is in such a big ****in hurry to get somewhere? Lived in our capital city for 17 years, morning and evening rush hour traffic was horrible, watched all the ****wits lane jumping trying to get ahead only to be sitting at the same next red light, absofruitly ****in insane, had to move away for my own sanity

My daughter, many years ago, while a young driver did something very similar. The truck swung wide left for a tight right corner, she watched the truck (dump truck) p*** and proceeded straight. What she didn't see was the dump trailer in tow and drove right under it. Lucky for her (and me) she was driving a square Volvo I bought her, it acted like a tire chock. The trailer's lead duals hit her square in the driver's door. She will never forget that day! She emerged un****hed, PTSD, but uninjured physically. Not so much for the rare GT, 2 door, 5 speed, sunroof Volvo, that was a complete total.

Those Volvos are tough! My daughter? Tougher after that day, and a much better driver.

 

I don't understand your "turning wide for over a year now" comment. Tractor-trailer combinations have always needed to turn wide. I believe that is a 53-foot trailer he was pulling, and if it is, the trailer tandems will off track 8 to 10 feet in a 90-degree turn. If it's a 48-foot trailer, the off track for a 90-degree turn is 6 to 8 feet. P***ing a tractor-trailer on the right is never a good idea.

And I don't understand your comment about the truck not having turn signals flashing. How can you tell that from a still picture? Do you think it might be possible that the picture was snapped just after the turn signal went off?

That was just my attempt at humor. We all know trucks or any vehicle for that matter with a trailer of any size take a wider rh turn radius. Hell at this point in human evolution it’s practically born with information. I can’t remember a time in my life where I didn’t know this.

 

Arm chair 1/4 back is easy . Just hope no one was seriously hurt . I drive daily as if everyone is out to kill me . Never never would I be of the right side of a semi truck in a right turn lane . Just not good real estate to try and occupy . They need room , give it to them , everything would have had a happy ending had the car not been there .

 

Wow I hope the driver of the Ford is OK. True that both share some responsibility however the car or smaller vehicle has to pay attention. In my neck of the woods roundabouts are latest trend. I see so many cars and PUs drivers trying to p*** tractor trailers in a round about its mind boggling. They don’t seem to understand that the tractor trailer can’t possibly stay in one lane. Also I know from experience pulling trailers that some drivers are oblivious to blind spots, don’t they teach that if you can’t see the driver in the mirror that he can’t see you out of his mirror either any more.

All the trailers have the turn signals in the middle of the trailer for years now and there's a story to go with that pic. People today, always in a hurry, high percentage have their head in their ****, and the skill level/ courtesy of truckers has dropped significantly IMO. A few years back I was in a very heavy traffic deal on a freeway, more semi's on road than cars these days in certain areas. I dropped back to let a trucker in as his right turn signal was on for a little while and a small car jumped into that spot to gain that 100' the trucker started to slowly move to right and the car held it's ground, I'm watching this unfold all this at 65 mph.The truck touched the little car and off the road it went, saw it roll over/flip in the drop off after shoulder in my mirror. The trucker, just kept going, possibly he did not see the car or ? Example of "You can't fix stupid" We traveled 6 years from Wi. To Az, being snowbirds, 30 hours drive time, 2000 miles whichever way you go, all good except at our age the driving got to be too much, 3 nights motel to break it up, have dogs so flying out of the picture For many years I chased racing all over Midwest many miles, less traffic, far less stupid on the road and I got old, that changes so many things.

 

the name on the trailer describes the Ford before the accident. .hope everyone is ok there.

 

Sorry, I didn't realize the humor at once. I get a little stiff-necked when people start blaming tractor-trailer drivers for things that they didn't cause. I'm not saying that there aren't bad truck drivers, but they are in a minority. In the last 23 years of my trucking career, working for a regional carrier, I drove just under 3 million miles safely, with no chargeable incidents. Early on, in the 10 years prior to that, I was involved in two property damage incidents, both my fault, the results of carelessness. I own them and freely admit it. While I'm on a rant, I wonder why people use the term "accident" to describe an incident caused by a lack of attention to what is going on around them? No accidents, just carelessness. Rant over

 

Working on farms you learn this.... many kids are missing 1/2 stuff we learned. Pulling hay wagons, with Farmall M, you swing right, hook back to look for cars turning left... before turning left. Sq Bale Wagons Stacked high and tight.

In rural Illinois, I was teaching my kid to parallel park with orange cones. He tells me they dropped requirement for parallel parking driver test. They said, you only need to know this if you live in Chicago.. wtf...

 

Parallel park? Hell, I'd be happy if they taught 'em to use the turn signals and dim their lights!

 

That’s some serious damage. Hope the driver isn’t injured. I see lots of newly built roads that are not really not designed to accomodate these truck/trailer combos. I give a lot of credit to the true professional commercial drivers out there as I could never put up the lunacy of today’s drivers.

 

Gosh. Stay away from and never drive along side a tractor trailer.
That Ford might be a Canadian model.

 

I have a OTR truck and I always tell my wife , stay away from all sides of the truck and trailer even when going strait down the road.
