I always thought those grilles on cars that used cupboard handles were cool. Last week I went to a big estate sale where I bought a whole case of NOS chrome handles like these for ten bucks. Guess I better get busy. aaa (14).jpg

The World’s first Dairy Queen opened in Joliet, IL on June 22, 1940. The building still exists and has been purchased by the Joliet Area Historical Museum and it will be renovated to its original appearance. DQ International is on board ***isting in the project.

    Hello,

In our old house that was a mile or so from Fuel Injection Engineering (Hilborn) in unincorporated Orange County property, there were some basic shops and chain novelty stores. The large grocery stores had their place in the plot of land or as we call it, a business strip. Now, smaller stores surrounded the large grocery store and made the whole area work as a quick place to shop for various items.

Then, as the strip of land and businesses became more viable, it was a one stop shopping for the necessities. If we needed shopping for school clothes, the Newport Coast Fashion Island was always down the coast.

But, for the most part, families stayed local and shopped at various smaller stores. One of the major draws to our local grocery store shopping center, was the slightly big corner store at the end of the strip mall. It was a Thrifty Drug Store. It was one of those stores that had everything at the lowest prices and made it affordable for young families. Anything from wooden/canvas sling back rests for beach and event back supports were well made and a popular item.

The store had a pharmacy and on the way out, was the famous Thrifty Ice Cream stand. The prices were outstanding. When a Baskin-Robbins came in at the other end of the strip mall, they had their followers. But, the majority of the families liked the Thrifty Drug Store simple ice cream. It was flavorful and low cost. So, more scoops were always the choices. Yes!

So, as the stores come and go in any large strip mall, the corporation ran into trouble and closed most of the large drug stores. But, the one thing still around was a hard core set of folks that still had a mini corner of the local markets ice cream cooler sections. Yes, a quart of Thrifty Drug Ice cream.

The brand disappeared for a while and now, in local grocery stores, this red label brand is making a comeback. Along with tons of old memories…

    Note:

One of our local surf shops called “Killer Dana” moved to a larger old Rite Aid Store, which was an old Thrifty Store in Dana Point. Since the building was a certified Thrifty Store at one time, the surf shop was able to get a license to sell old fashion Thrifty Ice Cream in the surf shop. Yummy… YRMV
