Event Coverage Definitely an Oh S**t! Moment

Alan, I am aware that it could be on and the pic was taken right after it went off. I just looked at it because of what happened to me. Probably should have written the statement a bit better.

We're cool. A little information for those who think that a tractor should swing wide for a turn. The following shows (A) The way I was taught, the safest way, and (B) the wrong way to turn. If you notice in the (A) example, the truck's path takes it into the oncoming traffic lane in order to make the turn. The driver has to wait for that oncoming lane to clear before making the turn. (B) is called a "farmer's turn" in most rural areas, and I see p***enger cars doing the same thing. No need for them to do that, but they don't know where the car is in relation to the corner of the intersection.

 

Yikes! Praying no one was hurt! I can relate as I drive a red 56 Ford and a semi. I wouldn’t want to be either of the drivers in that wreck.

 

Blind spots are a problem. I Cringe when people p*** on the right at high speed.

 

I was fortunate to be asked by my daughter to help with the driving lessons needed by my grandson. If I had my druthers we’d still be doing occasional driving lessons to focus on the many situations that come up. I did emphasize that almost any fellow driver could not see you when you’re in their blind spot….but especially vans and bigger trucks. I would remind him relentlessly when he happened to be in that situation…..and to either hold back or safely move on by. He’s been driving on his own for a couple years now but I still think of all the darn situations that have not yet happened to him. He’s a good young man and very responsible so I have hope for his driving future.

 

I have been driving my 57 since 1965 and I would never put it in that situation. With a tractor trailer you are asking for trouble.

 

The price of impatience. The human race is becoming less and less able to make reasonable decisions.

 

@Mac VP, according to all I've ever read about young drivers, if a teenager hasn't been involved in a wreck in the first two years of driving, he or she will most likely never be involved in one throughout his or her life. It seems that it is really about how mature they are when they are being taught. My oldest daughter and middle son were each involved in wrecks, caused by their own actions, within the first 6 months of getting their licenses. They are now both in their 60s, and to this day, they act as if they own the road. Their younger siblings have never had an incident of any kind. I think that the younger ones saw the punishments being handed out to the older kids and decided on their own life would be better for them if they just acted right. If your grandson continues to heed the advice and training that you've given him, I'll bet that he'll be just fine.

 

I am not familiar with that body style, what year is it '56?, the side trim looks odd also. HRP

Has anyone found out what actually happened and how the accident occurred?
With all the traffic cams, security cams these days, you’d think it would be easy to put together what occurred.
Being the son of a truck driver, I’ll not give my .02.

 

I was driving, my Dad and Stepmom back to Nevada, in a Honda Accord I decided to use the Roadside Rest at the top of Donner P***, A Semi pulling doubles was in the slow lane chugging up the hill, I got into the dedicated lane to pull into the Rest area, asked if anyone needed to pee? at the last minute the Truck driver decided to use the Rest Area too and pulled into my lane, but I was even with the front trailer, Luckily there was enough of the shoulder for me to move over, Blow the horn and avoid the collision, truck was moving slow so I stopped and let him take the exit. My Stepmom said " I didn't have to but I do now!" after we all relieved ourselves, The driver walked over and apologized, saying he didn't see me there, I told him no problem, as I had enough shoulder to get over and outta the way. Much like the squashed Ford, no way for him to see me in his mirror if he looked.

 

All trucks have or should have a convex mirror in addition to the big mirror on the p***enger side. It doesn’t totally eliminate the blind spot, but it comes damn close. Thing is, the driver has to use it.

 

All the preventive planning in the world can be instantly negated by one impatient dumb***. I hope no harm came to the owner of the car so he/she can live with the results of their impatience.

saw this exact thing happen. 2 lane road that ended in a T intersection. big rig was in the center and looked to me like he would be turning left. (no turn signal). I was 50 feet behind the car that went over to the right to make thier right hand turn and got hit. not as bad as that one, but it hit him in the windshield post.
100% the trucks fault. no signal, and no second look in the mirror when he went to turn. attention truck drivers: we can't read your ****ing minds.

 

When the truck driver apologized, He said he didn't think anyone was behind him, didn't use the blinker and it was a last minute decision to make the exit, I doubt he even tried to look in the mirror, even if he had glanced , I was in his blind spot in a small car. race track experience keeps me expecting things can go wrong in a hurry in close quarters.
