Event Coverage Cars that you never look at at shows

When I go to car shows there are a few cars that I never stop and look at. Try five Chevs are one of them, not because I don't like them. After 60 years of going to car shows I have looked at thousands of them and there is nothing new to see. Two seat Thunderbirds are another, and I own a 56. But again they are all the same, nothing new to see. Rat Rods go without saying. I like to look at oddball or orphan cars, or a car someone has done something different with. Customs always get my attention. What do you guys think? Are there cars you don't look at?

 

Maybe I'm just tired of car shows. I only go to a couple a year, and mostly to BS with folks I haven't seen in a while. Most of the cars are later models now, and don't interest me much, but there are always a few gems
Much rather drive somewhere, or go to a swap meet

 

That's why I don't go to car shows anymore. It's the group of people who like to BS in the middle of aisle and make it hard to get by or get a picture of a car.

Yes. That's also why I don't usually do shows. Only one I'd do would be if the best mild custom ever done was there even if it still had a busted rear window.

 

I love car shows, there’s always something cool that catches my eye. I also love the weird and oddball stuff. I skip right past corvettes though, and pretty much all muscle cars.

For years they have been saying "it's not about the cars it's about the people", I guess you don't ascribe to that at***ude, I like "the more humans I meet the more I like dogs".
Gotta admit, it's a big world out there and getting bigger, not getting better though.
Trends come and go but the interest in tri five Chevys doesn't seem to be diminishing, especially in that whole street g***er deal, which brings me back to the question........
No matter how cool the car is, if I see a "g***er" and it has whitewalls, I'll go right by it.

I still look at ‘birds, but only linger over the E and F codes. Or a period correct FE dropped in one. Tri 5’s just because a close friend has a Nomad.

I enjoy the smaller open shows more now. I like seeing the younger guys, with ricers, or low riders, and especially old school stuff (not rats) they can afford. Stops me from getting depressed and negative about the world changing.

 

I only go for drives and to our local cruise in anymore. I don't mind any of the acceptable HAMB cars but anything after 65 barely catches my attention. Not a Corvette, Camaro, GTO, Roadrunner, Mustang fan at all.
I do feel for the guys who build their car, take it to a show and be forced to park next to a car that the only thing the other owner has done is make payments. That is a real slap in the face

 

I go, look at most of them, I don’t have a lot of time for restored or 4 door cars, but I am working on that defect in my personality. I try to talk a little more indepth with a few guys. Last time it was with a 65 barracuda owner and a 1957 chev truck owner. Listened and tried to learn from their experiences. Complete strangers who let me bend their ear about their project. They also listened to in the first case how we drove a 66 from Georgia and in the second case how we briefly had a similar truck to beat about the farm with. Going to a swap meet in about an hour- 4 hours from home, will report back, might take my ipad and make a thread. Life is a journey that I am trying to make the best of, lots to see and learn and share…

 

I live in a little tourist town with many shows: Corvette weekend, mustang weekend, Porsche, real rich guy cars. Model Ts, jeeps, vee-twin barge bikes. Most have a parade, the only parade I liked was the Volkswagen parade. Those guys and their VWs have always been the most welcomed by the citizens here. The Corvette crowd is always the least appreciated. None of that for me anymore.

Driving them is nice but you don't get to know anyone that way. I like car shows. I like seeing my friends and making new ones and seeing what creations they brought or old stuff I haven't seen in a while. People take great pride in their work and their purchases; I like to give them their due. I have talked to guys about their rat rods, most are very cool and the builders for the most part have good ideas. They are artists largely and not building cookie cutter recreations of other people's work. Gotta give credit for that.

As I type this, I am waiting for the Advil to kick in and then it is off to the garage to make sure I have cars ready for tonight's car show at the park. My wife wants to drive her truck, my son is in town, and he is driving his family out in the Olds and I'm taking the patriotic dune buggy. The park has a swimming hole, paddle boats, bouncy house, lemonade fountain and mini golf to amuse my granddaughter who is visiting from VA. They have excellent eats, ciders, beers and wine for the adults, DJ, vendors, etc. Show starts at 4:00, we stand for the Anthem at 6:00, wraps up by 8:00 though we leave a bit earlier. Maybe 150 cars is all it holds so it is first come, first served. They allow everything on wheels. Last time there were VW buses, an H1 Hummer, British Invasion cars, new stuff and the old stuff which is my personal favorite. I'll have a bit of everything out there tonight, something for everyone.

There was a small car show at the park on Canada Day,
I walked right past the ‘57 Chevy because I’ve seen that one or one like it a million times.

the two cars I spent the most time looking at were a ‘50’s Chrysler with huge fins and a push ****on transmission and a 70’s Montecarlo convertible, because they were unique and interesting, although I probably wouldn’t own either car myself.


Several people have been offended by my Country Squire because it gets so much attention at shows.
Everyone has a station wagon story,
I’ve heard everything from getting car sick in the third row on a family roadtrip on Route 66 to loosing their virginity at the drivin movies.
The guy with the perfectly restored’57 BelAir hates it when people walk past his car to look at my woody.

 

I Still Enjoy Car Shows After 65 Years And Am Impressed That The Owners Took The Time To Bring Them Out...

 

I guess I have gotten a little jaded about car shows as I have gotten older. I search out the more unique now and will p*** by a 34 Ford or Chevy to look at the same year Plymouth, Dodge, Olds or Pontiac. Even though I also live in a tourist town, not a lot of car shows, and newer cars have taken over.

 

I don’t look at hardly any cars at shows anymore. I’m too busy talking to friends. I definitely don’t look at any old cars with stupid looking big wheels or late models at all. I do enjoy taking pics of some of the HAMB-friendly cars at shows and sharing them here. But, most shows are lacking in those unless it is something like the Gathering at the Roc or custom shows. Otherwise, most of the local shows are the stuff we all say we don’t look at…

 

I would consider it to be cruel and unusual punishment if I have to see any more 1959 and '60 Buicks or Chevrolets.
And any station wagon, in general, is okay to drive me to the car show....... but you'll have to drop me off before we get there so I can walk the last quarter mile so no one actually sees me in it.

 

Skip right over the foreign junk. But I’ll look at most anything else. I figure if they took the time to build their dream and drag it to a show, the least I can do is look at it.

 

The tri-5, corvette, anything newer then 2000.

I like the cars the owners have built themselves, be it a old hot rod, muscle car, station wagon etc.

Tired of seeing later model cars with nothing but stupid-@ss rims and some cover on the motor with pinstripes and all of a sudden it's a custom.... (shaking head..)

I do like looking at rat rods. Don't care for 90% of the build but it's that 10% I'm looking for. That one little attention to detail where something has either been built or being used that I would have never thought of.

Seen one with headlight buckets make out of old small art deco metal cookie jars. I couldn't figure out what they were and had to ask the guy. Don't know where he found them, never seen any since but the sealed headlight fit perfect, they were cool as hell.

Seen a old pro-street car that had a smoothed dash with mopar dash rocker switches mounted on the bottom of the dash where you couldn't see them but you could definitely feel them and their position, be it on off etc. Thought that was cool.

Like I said I look for details, things to learn, cool little nuances most people don't notice. But yet some builder decided to build,add, design it even though 90% to 95% would never notice it.

Rarely look at the cars. I go to visit and make new friends. I hate just sitting in a chair. I'm walking and talking.

Like most of you guys I have been to a lot of shows in the past and I usually make a path to what trips my trigger, if it's a 55 Chevy or a 32 Ford if it's a simple build and not over the top with stupid graphics, billet or couch upholstery I keep walking.

I prefer cars and trucks that the average guy builds in his own garage, I also enjoy talking with the people at the show, I've mage friend with some people I see once a year and set up the canopy for shade and have the cooler open and ready for anyone stopping by.

I generally walk around and take hamb friendly photos and post them here, Mark will often tell me a certain car has wheels too big and deleted them for me.

Shows have always given me ideas, some I have used and others I have not. I try to make the most of what's there and walk past rodent rods. HRP
