Event Coverage Cars that you never look at at shows

Most of my shtick is vintage/resto, and no matter what venue those lenses are on. I stop looking when I see confused. Like an early coupe with 40 wheels n caps but there's EFI and fab valve covers. There's no description for it but when something is stock and restored proper it really shows. Anyone can see it and it's no small feat. Some of the new vintage style is so far above what the best was back when. Still, dream clamps, rare speed equipment, dolled up like a Hollywood starlet (harlot?). I never look at cars with "hoops", I don't care who built it.

 

Not big wheels with spinners type cars. They piss me off.
The only reason that I'll look at rat rods is to see what cool garbage is on them. I seen one with a belt of M-60 ammo and it was just right for some reason and also I seen one with a dead mouse. I like to look very closely at these traps only when I think they are interesting. You'll never know what you'll see.
I'll by-p*** low riders unless there is a very good paint job on it.
Cars with a lot of bling tend to piss me off. It looks so fake so I'll walk by them.
I'll walk past a row of the same type car.
If they have a dog, no matter what type of car it is, I'll stop to play with the dog. Dogs don't piss me off. I like dogs better then most people. People piss me off.
Damn it! Now I'm pissed off!

 

I just p*** by all the late model cars, new Camaro's or Corvette's .. I like checking the cool Chev or Ford SWB trucks.. since I have a late model SWB 2006 Silverado .. a good Kustoms will stop me in my tracks and traditional Hot Rods.. Street Rods ugh... no interest..., hey the ball milled billet stuff went away a while ago..

 

Why the negativity?

I’m just keen to see folks out enjoying their unusual cars.

we should be thankful folks want to keep these cars on the road for future generations to drive and enjoy!

 

I p*** right by anything you can expect to see in the front rows of the car lots on auto row. If I want to look at cars that new I'll go to the car lots. There is a nice event tomorrow that will have local car groups with Mustangs and Camaros that might still have a just bought it sticker on them . Fun event but the last time I went I only took photos of about 30 out of 200 cars.
Not a fan of crusty 60/70 rides being p***ed off as patina cars. Your roached out 68 Ford Four door is not something special.
The big ugly rims on anything normally means I don't look at it or take photos of it. Lawn chairs or a mess in front of a car means that I don't take a photo of it or look at it. Family members inside the car are a no no. Setting up camp around and between the cars means I am not even going close to them.

 

I look at everything I like and sometimes it´s also interesting to look at stuff I don´t even like. I´ve never been into VWs and Porsches ( new or old) or Italian Supercars, but I´ve learned to appreciate them for what they are and the effort their owners put into them, even I don´t want to own one. I´ve made a few new friends over the years just by looking over my fence.

 

I'll ignore all the late model stuff and anything with an LS swap. I've seen enough Tri-5 chev's to satisfy any desire I ever had to see another one and at the last show I made a large detour around the battery powered Corvair. Nice car, but yuck... Also won't look at rat rods or any other home-grown weird-mobile...

I avoid the really big shows like goodguys, I prefer the smaller shows. Being a custom fan, the pickings are generally pretty slim for me at shows. With that said, I'll walk by tri-5 Chevys, pro streeters, faux g***ers, most muscle cars, restored pony cars of any brand, cookie-cutter 1-800 hot rods, bagged cars, and the conglomerations of junk known as rat rods, especially if featuring saws, skulls, spider webs and major rust. Pretty much anything with big wheels/o-ring tires or fake patina.

I will look at the oddball cars (including modified foreign), sometimes the occasional restored oddity. Honest g***ers and homebuilds will always attract my attention, along with true rarities and honest NICE survivors.

The last vehicle that truly interested me was a heavily-altered '57 Chevy pickup... a 4WD extended cab version, completely homebuilt. And this wasn't an attempt to make it look factory, oh no. It was very customized, dropped onto an early '70s 4WD frame, hand-made bedsides, frenched headlights, fabricated grill and taillights, swapped bumpers, shiny paint, the works. A bit of styling awkwardness here and there, but very well done. The owner said he wanted something different, and he got it in spades.

 

32-34 Ford street rods. Generally have crate sbc’s in them with the traditional Edelbrock rocker covers and air cleaner.

 

I’ve wanted to go to the Oblivion show for a few years because I was born in the 80’s and I remember those cars growing up. The coolest car in the neighbourhood was a college kid with the Toyota pickup from Back to the Future.

This year I got an email from Hagerty informing me that the 2006 Mustang I’ve owned since new is eligible to enter in the show that hurts my heart and I don’t want to go to a show to look at cars that are only 20 years old, and that I would consider a good used car.

EXACTLY!! There are too many clowns covering their cars with “trinkets & trash”, it has become an epidemic.

 

At least I haven't seen those stupid crying kids leaning on a car in a long while. I don't know how many times I had to restrain my buddy from drop kicking them across the parking lot.

 

What park?

 

I had not done car shows or cruise nights for about 10 years. Just did flea markets. Seldom looked at cars. This year Imade the effort to go to some. There was a lot to see. I still do not look at much made after 1970 though.
I do help at one of the big car auctions once a year. Most of those cars I would not look at either. Most of them that I should like are "confused" cars. Like someone stated above. they are usually a mix of parts that don't go well together. Like rubber band tires on a traditional car. Or cheap chrome valve covers and air cleaner on a number matching car.

 

I like taking the grandkids as they look at everything and have a blast. I prefer the pre ‘55 stuff.

 

Way easier to say what I look at…..than what I don’t look at.
Gravitate towards steel pre-war, non Easter egg hot rods. Maybe the odd street rod.
1970 and newer is always an easy p*** unless there is a chick worth looking at laying across the hood or seat.
Easiest stuff to walk past is the power parking groups. IE the corvettes, mustangs, Camaros, and for some god foresaken reason…Fiero dudes and dudettes.
God bless anyone and everyone that loves their ride and enjoys taking it out, but when I’m walking around I’m usually on a mission.

As we are having this discussion, a high school buddy from here in Oklahoma is at Goodguys in Iowa chasing down his old Superbee. Sent me a pic of himself standing in front of it. He is trying to buy it back about 40 years after he owned it before. Price went up…

No more "Car Shows" for me.. I , however will drop by a fund-raiser & donate if it's a worthy cause..
I only go to the local Cars & Coffee as it's only 8:00 - 11:00 AM , even though theres very few hotrods and tons of new late model bling cars... I have met lots of very interesting "tuner" people because the turbo setup in my roadster starts a lot of conversations.. You have to admit , the tuner crowd are just hotrodding differently with small motor / huge turbo combos and a computer.... Unfortunately , as Bob Dylan said "The Time's They Are A-changing "

 

Pickup trucks. I also don't have much interest is pickup trucks either.

 

I did a few large shows when I was a kid to dream long before I had a license or cars. Now I rarely go to anything without a swap meet, I love the smell, feel of old junk.....the possibility of building something with it. I'll look at cars as I walk to the swap and back to my car.....but it's the odd stuff that really makes me stop. An odd make or unusual model, restored, unrestored, old or newer doesn't matter....but most of the time it's just seeing a car outside a car show (in the parking lot or around town). An old 50s hot rod that was cleaned up (as much as it could) and returned to the road to a unrestored, clean 70s/80s import......both were cared for enough to still be in existence and viable.

 

I went there once. It is a really nice park and car show. The problem I have is getting over the I-5 bridge on a Friday afternoon.

 

I was at a show where a guy had one of those crying kids fastened to his tire and was driving around running over it with every revolution of the wheel. It really pissed off a lot of wives, but their husbands thought it was funny.

 

I haven't been to a CAR SHOW for a while but we went to a Auto/Air museum the other day in Hood River Or. There were a ton of nice old cars there, walked past most UNTIL I saw a 1957 ELDO 4 door air bag suspension, sitting on the floor, deflated, with a brushed stainless roof. I stood and looked at that car for the longest time. Id give my left nut for one of those although it would not fit into my garsge. So in a nutshell, its got to be pretty special now for me to give a second glance. Mitch

 

Gone to a hand of shows and cruise nights so far this year. Trying to go to shows further away with the hopes of seeing different vehicles. Was a huge muscle car fan as a teen, but will rarely stop to check any out now. I pay more attention to foreign cars these days, and of course always on the hunt for traditional hot rods.
