From an interview with the photographer for the cover, Elliot Gilbert: There was no lucite steering wheel back then, except in certain models of cars, you had to make everything. It's all ****og. I had the steering wheel, I just recast it. I cut the edges off and put a strobe light against the plastic. I didn't know what it was back then, but I wanted the steering wheel to glow. It was like fiber optics. I wanted something more see through so the light would kind of go around it and illuminate the steering wheel. It worked halfway down and then it kind of faded away. Today you could do it digitally. Putting [the model] together with this steering wheel, which was held up on some apple boxes and some sandbags to hold it down - and she was able to position herself like it was real.
Great album. I’m sure a lot of us have songs from it on a playlist (I do) but the way that they flowed into each other on this album was amazing. Same with candy-o.
The ones that Kris does have steel in them. I had him chrome my steel first, then pour the clear plastic around it.
I knew about the Pontiac and Mopar clear wheels. They are really cool but did not survive well. I would imagine the restoration costs on them are pretty high
Not many original vintage ones survived until today. That probably means that you have to get one made by one of the custom steering wheel shops. That's not cheap, but it will be something very special. (Moriarty is much quicker on the trigger than I am. He loaded and fired off his above reply while I was taking too much time pouring dry powder in my flintlock. He's both fast and accurate. )
