Discussing this with someone brought up an interesting question. If Oklahoma doesn't require a safety inspection (is that right?) who is to tell you whether or not you need to put lights on a car? I mean if you wanted to put a genuine ex racecar jalopy on the road and it didn't have any lights on it, would you have to put any on it to make it street legal? Would you even have to baffle the exhaust?
There is no more inspection, however you must have head and tail lights, brake lights, and a tag light. Most cops won't hassle you if you don't have mufflers as long as you don't act like a dork. You don't have to have a horn, but the way okies drive, you'll need one.
Oklahoma laws states that a vehicle must be in a safe operating order as it came from the factory.There fore if it came with one tail light and no turn signals and no seat belts then it doesn't have to have them.Also if it came with fenders it must have them as well.
yeah that's what i was going to say. no inspection gives the cops more authority to judge what is ticket worthy...
Seems most cops around here just don't care about hassling us in our old cars. In fact, the only time I've been pulled over in anything but a daily was a long time ago in Collinsville and it was just cuz the cop had a 41 Chevy and wanted to know if I had any leads on spare parts. Sorta pissed me off cuz my heart wqas bumping and my head was already calculating the insurance jump. When we did have state inspections we had to send the info to the state and they would send a letter stating that the old car was exempt from the safety inspection. But now it's everyman for himself and you ought to see some of the crap sitting on the side of the roads...
...I hear you guys, but the bottom line is that okie cops don't bother hotrodders unless they're actin' like a dork...at least not up here anyway. (it also helps to know all the cops in your town) Rashy beat me to it...
I heard they were an ass in Shawnee also. Don't know for a fact but... Here in Okmulgee we haven't had any problems yet. There are 3 car clubs and as long as you don't act like an ass, you're alright. I had a t-bucket without fenders, loud exhaust, never got hasselled, but we're getting alot of new cops too,so anything could happen.
