    @swi66 -
    That 'lil Vair better have some oats running against a C/S 442 sedan! Great pic, looks like 4 wide racing with a modified '57 in the next lane.

    I had lunch with Mr Gurney back in the middle eighties. You are 100% correct.

    Fairly common '49-'50 model changeover car. '49 emblem, '50 backlite. They used parts until existing stock was depleted.

    Hello,

    For as long as we have been going to our local drive-in theaters with our dad & mom, we liked all of the events that took place there. The food was different and if we went early, the hot dogs and cokes hit the spot.

    Our dad always got close to the pole with the metal speakers and for some reason, despite the long cord, he thought he had to park close to the pole that held them. The cord usually went into the back, so the two brothers could hear the sound better. That was nice of him.

    As teens, we had gone to drive-in theaters countless times. On dates, on teen gatherings parked way in the back rows and just friends hanging out for first run movies. The middle snack break was always welcome and we usually saw our friends hanging out there, too.

    For some reason, probably being a private property, the local police black/white cars were never seen cruising in the rows or perimeter of the tall metal walls. But, those ever present guys on red bicycles and white long coats with silly hats were always patrolling in the rows and sometimes between empty spaces having fun going “loop de loop” on their red bicycles.

    There were several memorable times in those drive-in theaters. There were 4 major sections of Long Beach and each section had their own drive-in location. One time, while on a date and after the snack break at half time, we got back in the car and decided to go to the local drive-in restaurant for a better snack, as the movie was kind of slow. So, we got in, slammed the doors and drove off.

    The motor of the 348 Impala was rumbling and we slowly chugged out of the exit driveway. Half way to the local teenage hangout place, someone waved to us that we need to check the p***enger door. So, we stopped and I checked it out. Well, lo and behold, a cord was hanging out of the door. And inside was a metal speaker from the drive-in theater we just drove out of a few minutes ago. Ha!

    So, as I pulled the speaker and put it in the trunk, I had no idea what we were going to do with it.

    Oddly, my brother had also done the same thing and now we had two speakers. As enterprising teenagers, we strung up the cords, now wired to a portable am/fm radio and we had great sounding speakers in the rafters of our backyard garage. YRMV
