I'm running $40 Thrush Glasspacks on my 454 w/headers and duals, and LOVE the sound... cheap and thumpy. My opinion isn't worth a hill-o-beans though.

it'd sound cool with no mufflers....smithys aree too quiet for me, and if you go with flowmasters, go with the 40 series...I have run acouple sets on my comet and am very happy with them...I changed sizes when I did the new motor...

This is one of those things that just can't be agreed on. It's a personal taste issue.

It also has A LOT to do with the placement of the muffler. I have 40 series Flows on teh 41 with three inch dumps right before the rear.

I haven't driven the thing for about two weeks. My hearing is starting to return...

My 60 lincoln had two set of mufflers stock. Now it has two sets of glass packs. longer ones at about the middle of the car (18" I think) and short ones just before the exhuast tip (10" I think). Has a nice quite sound... with a very low rumble.

Flowmaster make everything sound like a new truck.

I personally don't like the sound of Flowmasters.

They have the same sound as a flushing toilet.

I do like the sound of the Thrush glasspack and have one on my 6-cyl Falcon.

  8. How about Hush Thrush? Are thos still around? My buddy had a pair of Cherry Bombs on his '65 Galaxie 500 backin '71. Those had a quiet sound at idle but had a great sound revved up. Do they still make those?

Here at the shop we've been using Magnaflows In my opion they sound better than a Flowmaster. But it's like what Rash said it depends on the placement and your taste.

  12. I think I'd go to a car show early, watch cars come in, and ask guys what they were running... then you have some kind of clue what you like the sound of at least -

For the Bubbletop I agree with Burger.....Flowmaster 50's.

Cherry Bombs are still around and they sound good too.

for a bubbletop cherry bombs or glasspacks with smaller tubing (2")would have that crackle sound that i always dig. or go with bigger tubing 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 with flowmaster 40's or 50s. (40s are louder) that will give you more of a throaty performance sound. they aren't cheap but flowmaster offers those hushpowers. i'm not too fond of em but they are supposed to be quieter i believe.

Flowmasters sound like a thin coffee can to me. Put 2 1/2" pipe and the glass or steelpacks near the end of the system and call it a day.

  17. I'm going to hop in here, too, if you don't mind Oldfart. I've heard magna flow's the way to go, also. I was further told that glass packs, like the one on my pick-up, are a cheep, short term fix; they don't hold up to the heat as well as mufflers and burn up much sooner. Kind of a pay me now or pay me later kind of thing. But what do I know.
I could use some advise on mufflers types, too. I'm going with
2 1/2" duals on a 350 Pontiac with H.O. heads. I want it to have a clean, open air sound whith a deep burble but not too loud for around town. The car's a convertible so the idea is to hear the horses for a harmonic driving experience without being overwhelmed (except at full throttle. When I pass 'em I want 'em to hear me.)
    Any suggestions?

P.S. Borlas on a small block sound like a Harley stuck in the bottom of a tin can. I's told.

I just had the pipes done on my Coupe, it's got a basically stock SBC. I went with two inch pipe and the shortest Smithys Speedway offers. I also had the guy install some cut outs that exit just in front of the running boards, it's the best of both worlds. It's quiet until the caps come off but it still has that old time Hot Rod sound.

For referance, Despite the name, Flowmasters flow LESS than every other major brand of performance mufflers.

i guess if you want your car to sound like a late model mustang, flowmasters would be the way to go.

personally, i'd run glasspacks. i've also ran Walker Dynomax race mufflers on a 450hp small block, sounded meaner than any flowmasters i've heard. nice rumble at idle, would make your ears bleed at WOT.

If you like your exhaust sounding like you're dumping it into empty garbage cans, then Flowmasters are your choice.

Personally, I can't stand the echoing that Flowmasters produce.

    Flowmasters = MULLETS!!!!!!

  26. My '39 has Flowmasters that the previous owner put on them and I don't like them. They don't sound near as good as the glasspacks that my '56 had. I am sure that my memory is correct after all these years. . .late 60's has it been that long? When $'s allow I am gonna change them to something else. I asked my Dad about Smitty's and he said they were like glasspacks and he is remembering back to the early 50's.

Listening to cars arrive at a car show sounds like a good idea. Let us know what you go with.

I have a very mild solid lifter 433 in my El Camino.Beings that mine is more of a daily driver and since I didnt want it real loud I used 2 1/2 '' into OE Chrysler Hemi Mufflers and 2 1/4" over the axle.Makes a really nice mellow tone at an idle and zero resonance at any speed or RPM... Still has enough capacity for some fun without having to deal with attracting unwanted attention.... yet still has that CLASSIC OE 60's muscle car tone when your right foot gets heavy.
