Kind of a shame how tire tech & track prep have made drag racing less fun to watch. Now in every cl*** they hook & are gone. I kind of miss the quarter mile smoke show in both lanes. I believe tires & airo have ruined a lot of great racing. Just any old guy remembering how it used to be.

This old guy remembers the packed in crowd pushing and pulling on the chain link fence, trying to get the best view of the racers on the track. My problem was the smelly lady with the bubble hair do that forgot to put on some deodorant and made things not right. Plus, her hair stuck into the camera every time she leaned forward. It was the pits, not the race track, pun intended…

But, as I was a solid teenager, I held my place and took these films in March of 1960. It was an elimination race with Tommy Ivo Twin versus the Adriance Appliance FED. It was the first “wheelie” for Tommy Ivo in the twin. Still, he had the power to continue his winning streak.

Previously, I had taken some good action films of the Adriance Appliance FED at Lion’s Dragstrip. But, unluckily, he chose the World’s Fastest Chevy FED to race.

Note:

This old guy remembers every time I went to those early drag racing events, from a 3 hour drive to two different West Coast race tracks to see some big name drag racers gathering to race each other. Also, it was a 15 minute drive to Lion’s Dragstrip near our house to film the local racers do some damage to the record books…YRMV
