Event Coverage Old Cars are Meant to be Driven!

After completing the Dream Truck restoration, it was time to do what I set out to do.... That was to do what Spence intended to do, and that being to share it with the many folks out there who watched it being built through the little pages of Rod and Custom Magazine. I showed it a little and drove it a lot. At one point at the Orange County Cruiz'n show in SoCal, I got tired of talking, so I parked the Truck at the oposite side of the fairgrounds with a note on the dash that read "go ahead and take it, just don't forget where you found it"..... I watched it go by several times, and was told I was nuts to do that, but think of the stories that get to be told....... The picture was taken during the first KKOA Lead Sleds..... The second was taken in route to Kurt's house near St Louis. Why ship a critter when you can drive it.....

I've put almost 30k miles on my 60 f100 in the last 2.5 years. Its all I drive. The newest vehicle I own is an off topic 67 pony car. When my shoebox coupe gets done it will take over except when the snow flys.

Stormy drive last night. Seems I was not too far south of some tornados that came through.

 

Now that I’m pretty sure that the car is a reliable driver it’s my go to ride and first out of the driveway. I did some running this past week going to a couple of doctors appointments and had few errands to run and snapped this when I was going into Target.

 

Very cool! @winduptoy and @MMM1693 both get it too. They drove the two cars in front of me here from New Mexico and Minnesota to a little show in Oklahoma a couple weeks ago.

Thanks for the bump and reminder. It has been hot enough lately that I haven't been the best example of driving the old cars daily. I need to swap out the radiator in my 51 so I can get back to that. Maybe tonight...

 

I've been putting quite a few miles on the Produce truck. I live about 10 miles outside of the closest town, so anytime I need to run to town, I jump in it, instead of the wife's Lincoln. I've been through 2 tanks of gas this month.

 

Been daily driving the box until today cause I had to haul a bunch of dirty fryer oil, and that **** wasn't Goin in the car..... Lol.

But I agree with Jeff, it's damn hot. Whew. We live at the lake and all I wanna do is swim, but I can't cause I have some pretty heavy road rash from a skateboard wreck.... I'm an idiot....

 

Michigan ****S lately. Feels more like Texas or Alabama and right when I'm trying to get my car on the road, what a pain.

 

It’s been way to hot for me and is getting hotter this week into next so mine is sitting in the backyard under the carport needing a bath and a waxing really bad.

 

I drive my 59 to work just about every day. Need to get the hood back on my gmc and start putting miles on it as well.

 

May I suggest wider trucks or an additional wider outrigger axle, (say, two feet wide) in the middle of the board

One of my favorite road trips is when @drdave and I drove up to Indy for the second CCR. We met up with @travisfromkansas and a bunch of Kansas friends and Gary Minor in Hannibal Missouri. I wish I took 100 more pictures of our adventure.

 

Lol. My brother said "I figured after riding fifty years you'd either know better than to still get on it, or you wouldn't still **** at it by now."

 

My 61-year-old youngest son gets on his every morning with two dogs on leashes. They pull him around the city park, then go home acting like they'd done a day's work . They haven't crashed yet.

 

I'd drive my car anywhere but just won't leave it alone. TOO MANY aholes who have no respect for the car. I'm building a 49 Dodge pick up now and it WILL be a daily driver, no shiny paint on this one.

 

My first fall since I was a kid, was riding in flip flops, and I know better..... Flip flop got me.... I literally warned my kid the day before about riding in flops. Oh well. Is what it is. Ya ride till she bucks ya, or ya don't ride at all.

 

Ok, so I may not have been completely upfront with my lack of activity driving old cars recently. Just last week, I bought my wife a slightly off topic car that hasn't seen any real miles for probably 20 years now and woke it up from its slumber. It went down the road great right until the throttle hung open and didn't want to stop when I got it off the highway. Got that fixed and have driven it almost every day since getting it. I also got my 56 out for the first time in a while the other day to remind myself that it didn't rebuild itself while I have been neglecting it... Pics coming later this evening if I get my radiator swapped out and get the 51 back to reliable without having to constantly fill it with coolant. Some guys asked me what it was leaking last Friday night at a little car/bike show that I took it to.

That retirement life sounds too easy. I go through two tanks of gas a week when I am driving the 51 daily.

 

I was about to say.... I'm in the same boat dailying the 59. 2-3 days of driving and I'm needing to fill up again. Oh well, still better than driving a soulless ecobox all the time.

 

Got my radiator swapped, so back to daily driving.

Drive 'em! I recently finished a 1500 mile route to attend Back to the Fifties in the twin cities. The old hemi doesn't know that it's 70 years old, and ran like a new one.

My daughter and son in law, starting from a Chicago suburb, went on the Power Tour and did the long haul thing to the end... Then they spontaneously decided to go the distance to Cali on Rte 66 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Mother Road. All in her (off topic) '69 Nova that is essentially her daily driver. Gotta love it!
