Hot Rods Shaving sidewalls on my Excelsior Radials

I need 4 Excelsior Stall radials shaved for a new roadster I'm starting, any suggestions?

 

I know Coker sells them, I think Diamond Back does too.

Are they out of balance or out of round and what wheels are you running?
Due to your location you may have trouble finding someone to do it locally. Truck workshops seem to be the only ones doing it now.

 

Gary, are you shaving the tread for roundness or cleaning off the sidewall?

 

I thought side wall would be buffing.

I have put like 65 psi in tires
In rain smoky burn out to true tires

 

The side walls of the Excelsior's tires look like a bill board. I guess I phrased my question wrong. Should have asked about smoothing the side wall. Diamond back does it to the tires they sell but won't touch an Excelsior tire. (Liability) Please don't suggest doing it my self.

 

You only have to look at the tread to know that they are Excelsior radials. They stand out like the proverbial! I run them on the front of my coupe and Auburn Deluxe Radials on the back. The Auburns look like the Firestone cross-ply and I've had guys ask me why I'm running radials on the front and cross-plies on the back- they didn't read the side wall.
Re buffing the sidewall, ask your builder if he'll do it.

 

Ignore my post Gary, I didn't realise that Excelsior had the Roadster Radials which are different to the Stahl Radials which have the ugly tread pattern. Saw your post on the other thread about 32 Ford tires and agree that the big Excelsior on the walls is not great.

For anyone contemplating bias look radials the Auburns from Diamondback are round from the get go, last longer, cost less than anything from Coker and they will shave the sidewalls for you. They shaved mine at no additional charge.

 

The proper term for "shaving" the sidewalls, is: "Cutting", or "Tire Cutting". Why, I have *no* idea. Was told it's an insider/industry term. I looked into it as a small business yrs ago, & found out that used-car-emporiums would have this done to hide the different-any-make skins on a car. Not a lot of demand, but the business I was interested in, was the Custom Whitewall version, so's the sides got cut & the white or colored rubber got rolled on. Sidewalls needed cutting for that, + the smoothing since lettering/etc looks like hell, esp w/valleys thru it... . Does make the tires look nice, though. No, I didn't get into it, as it would be, at best, very low ROI, not even enough for "fun", esp considering the time n $ invested for the machine & materials. Well, nuts, anyways, but at least I didn't lose a bunch of bucks.

I've done several cars using Diamond Back smoothed BFG tires. Look great. I have Diamond Back wide whites on my 40 coupe & smoothed BFG's on my new roadster Problem is I need a 500/16 & 700/18 tire that matches front and rear and has the appropriate look. The new Coker Excelsior Roadster tires are good but they don't make an 18 and as far as I know they don't smooth the side walls.

I buffed my Tudor's sidewalls smooth.
It's one of those modifications that looks great but few people notice.

The process is like prepping filler & primer for paint: Start co**** and gradually move to smooth. I practiced on Wifey's minivan before attempting the hot rod tires.

Really pathetic that a tire manufacture who sells car enthusiasts type tires have the stupid***
**** plastered all over the sidewalls.

Once again… do these idiots actually use the **** they manufacture?

 

Hire some 16 year old girls to use your car to practice parallel parking. Problem solved

 

The excelsior logo does seem to be a little over the top. It would keep me from buying them.

 

Probably have to have my wheels refinished after the girls learned to park.

 

Bus drivers are also good at smoothing out side walls!

Too late... tire shops that cater to the trucking world all have tire shaving machines.

 

my buddy used a DA sander. then he actually made them wide whites with some interior vinyl dye spray paint. he said dont put it on to thick or it cracked. they looked great.

 

I bought a full set of DB crossply look radials ,very happy , apart from the **** ugly sidewall lettering. Spent hours with the DA working down through the grits sanding it off . Left all the offical dot numbers on . It came out pretty good. Then I found out I could have ordered them with out the ugly advertising, duh.

 

I asked Coker about smoothing the Excelsior side walls and their response was that's against the law. Diamond Back will only smooth what they sell. Hard to believe that someone hasn't started a cottage industry smoothing the sides of hot rodder's tires Maybe there's not as much demand as I think plus the shipping plus liability..

 

There is a guy over here in the UK that does it, he does new tyres, part worn tyres, smoothed Blackwall and painted in whitewall, he can also supply new pre smoothed/whitewalled tyres.

Goes by the name Mr Whitewalls, he also sells the painted/coating he uses for the WWs.

Surely in the good ol YOOESSUVAAAYY with your lower regulations someone could be doing it.

 

When I was a much younger man, I saw my first hot rod with buffed sidewalls and I thought it looked really cool. I asked the old man by the car how he got them to look like that. He told me you got to get some whole wheat toast, gotta be whole wheat, white toast won't work. Then get your wife to hold the toast on the side of the tire and run along side the car while you drive it down the street. Gotta use whole wheat, white bread won't work.

 

How many blocks does it take per tire? And how many pieces of toast?
