What did you drive in high school?

87 was the last year for the G bodies for GM.

 

Learned to drive on my dad’s 69 T-bird and my grandmother’s 68 Beetle. Then got my uncle’s 71 Skylark during high school.

Very interesting following this thread, a lot of us worked, my story, home chores, cut gr***, shoveled snow business then a paper route 12-16, saved my money, My avatar I built using junkyard speed shop parts. Today driving past our local high school, some very nice cars/trucks in the kids lot, yet I rarely see a young person working anywhere here and there's not a business that does not have a help wanted sign posted especially now in tourist season. Hmmm, times change, kids do not have to work today I guess..... My kids had home chores then part time jobs, they had cars they purchased.

 

Yeah I had 2 different 56's in high school both were 210 hardtops. Most of them were BelAir's.

 

Mainly rode the BSA through high school. The 66 Pontiac 2+2, friend had it, he crashed it and got disgusted with it and bought another car, a ‘68 Barracuda convertible.I had an extra motorcycle,a basket case that I was pretty disgusted with. So we traded even up, July 1970. Still drivable, just ugly.

Fast forward a year I was working in a Pontiac dealership, a combination of mostly new but a few used parts I had the Pontiac looking presentable albeit in primer though, paint came the next summer.

 

I graduated high-school in 2005 and drove a 1978 Chevrolet Caprice 2 door, the only carburetored car at school. It had a 350ci sbc (170hp when new), th350 and a open 10bolt with 2.41 gears. The car's steering box was so loose it made Rockford turns super easy. It wasn't the car I wanted, I wanted a fox body mustang or honda crx, not mom's hand me down caprice. I reluctantly took it and it was a fun car. Could fit over 10 people in it and had a blast, just had to be careful of the giant rust holes in the floor. I eventually added the rally wheels that are pictured, lowered it, doubled the horsepower with a crate engine, and started fixing the rust.

 

Here in the Sunny South the public School system paid 17-18 year old teenagers with good driving records to drive a bus, we had to take a written test and complete a 3 or 4 day course to qualify, I drove a 1957 Ford bus my senior and got 22 bucks per month, I was the last one to drive than bus. HRP

You know somewhere in the world some poor ******* drove a Yugo to high school.

Dad was a cheapskate, which is where I got it, and would not pay for insurance for me to drive to school every day, I could only use the cars occasionally. So I took the big yellow bus.

But I did get to drive the family cars around for other things. They included the slightly OT family wagon and Volvo, and the 61 Impala ragtop, and the 59 Chevy pickup that I still have.

here are a few pictures from the 1970s of the old cars that I was fortunate enough to drive in my teenage years. Who'da thunk I'd get to where I am, from such humble beginnings?

 

I drove a 56 Ford Victoria that my cousin had hit a pine tree in the ice. I fixed it and drove it. Later I bought a 55 Chevy Bel-Air hardtop for $35 at a car lot where my uncle workd.

 

Bought it in middle school in 1991. Drove this and my '67 C-10 to school. Still have both.

 

High School car 1966 1967 was a 1955 Chevy Belair 2 Door post sedan. Straight 6, 3 speed on the tree. Back then, the girlfriend sat next to you on the bench seat. A.M. radio and installed a reverb and back speaker to give it that Stereo sound. After Graduation, that Summer, put a 283 2 barrel with a Muncie 4 speed , Hurst shifter. Added Nomad 7 leaf rear springs and 409 front coil springs. Jacked up cars were KOOL then.

My first car was a $500.00 71 Chevelle
307 turbo 350. I worked after school chasing grocery carts at Stop&Shop and
caddying at the golf course. Made it through high school and I sold it for $300.00. Next up was the first of 10 Novas.

Just a follow up. Later that year after graduation, my cousin Bernie got me started on my 40 Ford Deluxe Coupe. Out came the 265 Chevy and the Cad/ Lasalle trans. We put a 63 409 425 hooked to a T-10 4 speed with a 55 Chevy rear. We were probably the first to use parrilla rear springs. Took the mounting bracket from a junk 55 Chevy and had Perth Amboy Spring Works shorten the springs. No kits back then. Backyard Hot Rodding. Still have the car today. It's apart, no 409 no 4 speed no 55 chevy rear. Some updates using Ch***is Engineering stuff.

 

I would still be happy with it. I love that body style

I was supposed to drive this 1951 Oldsmobile sedan, since I already drove it without a license. I drove it around the block, after I washed it in the driveway. Then, when it was really dirty or mud caked underneath after the rainy season, I drove it to the spray booth down the street. I took care of this as it was my ride to what I needed to do, sports games, basketball, baseball, etc. way before I got a license.

One day, the 51 Oldsmobile sedan cruiser, was gone and then a surprise was in store for me.

This 1958 Chevy Impala was parked in the driveway to start a new adventure.

So, again, it was my maintenance jobs on the car that led me to believe it was going to one day, be my teenage hot rod sedan. The drag racing started a month after my brother purchased it in the fall of 1957. From that time on, I did the same maintenance, detailing, clean ups and new dragstrip stuff. changing the slicks to street tires, uncap exhaust pipe outlets, change spark plugs for eliminations, etc.

This was all in order to have a ride to all of my sporting games. But, I also was able to drive by myself around the block after washing the car. Then I detailed it as well as I could. Also, I was now a part of a drag racing prep team. No driver's license as yet, but close.
I finally got to have my turn at the wheel of the impala. Despite not having a driver's license, my brother allowed me to race the Impala. A couple of times with our Bruce Slicks on during time trials, and two other cl*** eliminations for trophies. Yes !

As the years rolled on, we started another build of a 1940 Willys Coupe for the Gas Coupe and Sedan Cl***. The Willys Coupe was going to have a 283 SBC motor with carbs and eventually be my brother’s new ride to school. But, the second stage of our build to a 292 SBC motor with a 671 supercharger on top provided a fast coupe getting close to the national record in our C/Gas Cl***. Then we had an unfortunate drag racing accident and all things stopped for several years of medical recovery.

Now, the Impala was the main transportation to the doctor’s offices for my brother and I was the driver, with my new license. I started high school and was able to drive the 58 Impala to school, while my brother was at home recovering from the accident at Lion’s Dragstrip.

At first, it was a drive to high school as a necessity. Then, as my brother got better, he moved in a new direction and the Impala fell in, as my only ride to school. As high school moved on in years, my brother got into surfing and creating his own built-in components for camping in an empty VW van(s).

Now, I was the principal driver of the 58 Impala through graduation and continued until 1965, when I sold the Impala to a young friend from school.

But, as a need arose, I had to buy a flathead powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery. The Impala was not a surf transportation car. So, now, I had a place to store stuff and/or sleep, for day surf trips or long distance week long surf adventures. In the Santa Barbara area during the winter and spring/summer in the Baja Mexico region.

Yes, the flathead sedan delivery was a chuckle for most teenagers that only saw a sedan delivery as a worker’s car, plumber, tv repair guy or a guy who brings dry cleaning to the door.

The reception I got when we drove to the surf movies all over So Cal in the early 60s was outstanding. It was like being a star with the most unusual surf vehicle of all time… rare to say the least… ha!

I was probably taking a well deserved nap in the back of the sedan delivery… Our normal surfing hours were darkness in the early morning to well past lunch for round one. A long nap and then when the afternoon “gl***y” conditions return, surf until beach park closing or darkness… YRMV

Oldsmobile Cutl*** RWD was offered until 1988.
It was called the Cutl*** Supreme Cl***ic. Was very similar to the 1987 Cutl*** Supreme with some slight differences. 307 had a knock sensor used on 88-90 307s found in the '88 CSC and B bod Olds Cruiser wagon.
Cl***ic was used in 88 to distinct the 'true' Cutl*** from the W body FWD Cutl*** Supreme SL.
There was also a regional '88 Cutl*** GT. A 'sporty' Cutl*** with H/O esque pinstriping and 83/84 hood scoop and decklid spoiler.
Power was still a 140HP Y code 307. All 88's had TH2004R trans.

Chevy also continued on with the Monte Carlo for '88 as well in RWD, where it was replaced with the FWD W-body Lumina in '89.

Poncho GP and Buick Regal were only FWD in'88.

Most folks think last year of G bods is due to the GN going out with a bang in '87 with the optional GNX model.

Cutl*** and Monte lasted til '88

 

1973 F100 with a 2bbl 360/C6 combo or a 1986 Aerostar 3.0/A4LD. Graduated in April 1991, turned 19 in July of 1991.

College saw the “good cars”: 54 Buick, 33 Willys, 68 Catalina 2dr 400/400, 64 F100 292/4spd, 65 GTO with the top cut off ($50, pulled it out of a canyon in Latah County Idaho), 56 Corvette, 58 Corvette, 66 Rustang 170/C4, 41 Pontiac, 68 Belvedere 383/727, Packard phaeton, multiple F1-F3 trucks, and the to me crown jewels… 2x Hudson Hornets. 1 had raced at Daytona, the other was stone stock. Everything listed is long gone, bought cheap, stacked deep, cleaned up and sold if not totalled out first.
