Board track racer said to built in early 1910's

Indian engine, 3 speed, chain drive to one wheel. Throttle on the left clutch on the right . Band brake on the rh rear.

 

Board track racer for sure. Only has tires on the off side!!

 

Just like building an hot rod used to be about going to the junkyard and finding the parts and modifying them to build a vehicle. Now, you just pick up the phone and give them your credit card number.

 

Duncan Pittaway runs his steam car in the London to Brighton event. He also built the Hornet as well as the huge Fiat Mephisteles.

This is from about a month ago. I am pretty close to the first test drive now and then it will be body work and paint. The next big fabrication will be the hood and the hood sides. Harley engine, 700r transmission.

 

How are you dealing with the torque thumps from the engine? They tear a gear box apart.

 

A non-lockup torque converter will help?

 

When I first saw another one of his vids this morning, I was scratching my head. Going through others vids on his channel like this one explains it all. Haha! Pretty cool contraption.

The Gratfon appears to have chain drive to the rear wheels via short chains from some device under the seat. I cannot see a driveshaft so I wonder how power gets from the engine upfront to the rear.

 

Have a look at this vid at about the 2 minute mark. In another vid he mentions it has 3 forward speeds and no reverse.

 

Thanks, what a great video. He needs to have a key in that rear sprocket rather than just clamping it up tight. I still couldn't see the gearbox so I ***ume it it a motorcycle box with clutch.

 

I suspect it’s some type of GN gearbox.

 

I haven't read the book the Grafton was built from so I don't know what it suggests. A chain gang setup requites a bevel box of some sort and lots of fiddly bits to make it work. A bike box with clutch would be so simple to do. It does look like a chain is coming from something forward toward the engine with one chain driving the jack shaft and a chain to each rear wheel. It was the jack shaft sprocket that failed in your video.
Along this line of thought I've always wondered hoe the Bedalia tensioned the drive belts to make it go. There appears to be a jack shaft for the front pulleys but then how is that connected to the engine without slacking a belt there?

Oak Swamp is quite a nice site. Looks like he followed the lead of ****** Mary with that build. I would think a Crosley engine would be really rare across the pond.

Interesting build but I couldn't listen to him blabber on for 20 or 30 minutes,

 

I watched that vid, but agree that he’s all over the place. Watched a few more in the series as I’m interested in his rear axle setup, but got tired of all the other content. It’s too bad as he has got talent and does really interesting stuff.

 

Anyone know what this is?
