Hot Rods MEL engine questions

hi wonder if somebody would know where to buy original over size piston or have a set thanks

 

Does Egg or I think that's the spelling for it have some. They seem to make a lot of odd ball engine pistons.

 

I did some hunting and found this in a 1958 Mercury.

 

is that the 383 FE engine?

 

I think it's a 383, but is it FE or MEL? I couldn't get the door open to check any tags or anything.

Yup, with the fuel pump out front on the top as shown in the picture, it's a MEL not an FE.

Back in Honolulu in '64 my pal pulled one out of a Lincoln. My memory says 430 but who knows. It went into his boxy '58 pickup and he was king of the road; at least in his 19 yr old mind.

 

I think it was the Taunus , not the Taurus. The moniker was used by Ford Germany. The name comes from the Taunus mountain range in Germany.

The Taurus was the FWD Ford Jelly bean fwd released for the US market in the 1980s.

Different cars with similar, but different names and lineage.

I have some of these engines in my salvage yard I have a complete one out of the car message me the measurements you want and I will be happy to get them for you

 

Egge and Kanter both sell MEL pistons of various sizes. However, they are generic flat top slugs that will significantly reduce your compression ratio and compromise the quench and chamber swirl causing a significant decrease in engine performance. This leaves you with two options, run the flat tops and add forced induction to take advantage of the low compression ratio, or have custom pistons made. Custom pistons have come down in price significantly over the years as CNC machining technology has improved.
