The McDougal Filling Station is a historic, house-style gas station located about three miles east of Vinita, Oklahoma, on Historic Route 66. Built around 1940 by George and Grace McDougal, it is known for its distinctive "Giraffe Stone" masonry—a patchwork of light and dark sandstone.

There is a place on the Texas Panhandle where the state line runs down the middle of a road that no one drives anymore, and on either side of that line there are buildings that remind you of what Route 66 used to be. Glenrio straddles the Texas-New Mexico border in a way that feels symbolic now: a town that existed precisely because of movement, because of the great American highway, and that disappeared when that movement was rerouted onto Interstate 40 in the 1970s. The last gas station closed. The motel shuttered. The cafe went dark. And Glenrio became what it is today, one of the most complete ghost towns on the old highway.
At its peak, Glenrio was exactly what it was designed to be: a stop for people going somewhere else. Texas had liquor stores, New Mexico had casinos, and the state line location meant the town could cater to both. During the Dust Bowl years, migrant families heading west p***ed through here in a steady human current. John Steinbeck wrote about the road. The diners and the filling stations along it were the infrastructure of that great migration, and Glenrio was one of them.
What you find there now is the kind of quiet that only comes after traffic stops. The buildings are standing, more or less. The Texaco pumps lean. The windows are clouded over. A town that lived by movement has found a strange permanence in stillness. If you drive the old US 40 alignment from Amarillo, Glenrio is one of the last stops before you cross into New Mexico, and it looks exactly the way you hope a true ghost town will look.

Spotted today in Serecuse Missouri

 

Springfeild Missouri Rockwood motorcourt, oldest operating motorcourt on route 66 attached to the motel is a well kept Shell gas station. I believe it was built in 1922. Rooms at the court are very nice and around $100 a night worth the stay.

 

Brookside Missouri rather affluent area. Phillips 66 full service station art deco styling shop was 3 bays with one lift in back and a carport/awning on the far side. The interior was like walking back in time just stocked with modern product, ill have to take some more photos in the future. The attendant seemed to think it has been in continuous operation since opening.
