Jeez, first a dress code and now throwing discarded parts is bad? Yeah, those are real old bits, but it's not like tossing Aunt Minnies ashes around...

If I were building a A, this is a thread I'd follow. I'll follow it anyway, as DF is entertaining as well as informative.

 

David said the ch***is is becoming a speedster. See his face (Dave played it off as best he could) when Sam tossed the steering column then the steering wheel shattered. So much for the speedster being complete now.

 

My wife was watching and was asking why he was doing that... My response was "Its youtube"...

 

He needs to be reminded he’s not on Roadkill anymore

 

It’s entertainment, would I do it NO, I think he pitched stuff like that to get a rise out of the restoration crowd.

"Real old bits" may have a future use, and therefore a value.
"Aunt Minnie's ashes"............ not so much.
I guess a little respect could be excercised when handling either one.

EDIT: For any that have missed it, this is posted as humor directed towards the Aunt Minnie comment.
As I said earlier in this thread, a sense of humor is certainly a hit and miss thing.

 

When I've discarded unneeded parts I've just chucked them like that... but I guess everything I've done that with is newer than thst

 

When the body hit the inside of the tires was a very relatable moment. Spend so much time focusing on one spot (the fender and outside of tire fitment) that the inside fitment is forgotten

 

Yeah, I found that....um....interesting. Oops!

I enjoy his content. Both entertaining and informative. I think Dave suffers from the same affliction I have. I call it AADD, automotive attention deficit disorder. I can not stay focused on one kind of car or project for an extended time.

 

I really appreciate the kudos and kind words from you guys. The others who criticize, judge and speculate do so based on what they THINK they are watching. Like people commenting on throwing parts… seriously? That’s what you got out of the whole damn episode? Are you not a hot rodder? Do you spend more time on your computer than in the garage every week? Before you answer those questions… let me tell ya’all about the throwing of parts… just to hopefully make you laugh and not take this stuff so seriously… Here goes… believe me when I say that ZERO parts of value were destroyed when I threw them on the ground. A back story on why I personally find it funny… when I worked at Sears Auto Center 30 years ago after school… a fellow mechanic was replacing a starter on a diesel Chevette. Well, it might of been the three hours of trying to get the starter out, or that he had to unbolt the engine from its mounts and jack the engine up, or it might have been the fact that he had a two year old at home, a kid on the way, worked an 8 hour shift as a mechanic at a shop across town and then came to Sears to work 4 more hours… or that his wife wasn’t helping the situation AT ALL (they divorced) orrrrr the fact that all of this just added up to his misery. But once he got the starter out, he calmly walked to the edge of the shop, and he shot-put that thing about 20 feet out into the parking lot! I was worried that he had finally snapped. But he became a legend that day, and we eventually laughed our ***es off about it. The point is, we all do things to humor ourselves, and if we’re lucky, someone might find a little humor in it as well. No more, no less. And about the steering wheel… I felt bad (and was actually surprised) when it chipped… at first… but then quickly realized it was a 70’s Taiwan copy that should be destroyed anyway. And yes, I do have a proper original to replace it on the speedster! We have three evenings in on it, one more after work Wednesday Night Garage Night and we’ll be driving it around the block! My son Cal and I built one in a week, but he had to sell it to buy a better commuter when he got a job out of town. So, after popping Gumby off this stock ch***is, David gave it to Cal for his birthday. Now you know a little more than half the story…

 

So glad I don't have a camera on me when I'm working, I'd probably be in social media prison for the stuff I say and do.

 

SamIyam, haters gonna hate, be it on instagram, Facebook, even the HAMB. I am truly enjoying the series you and David are putting together build his A. I had never seen the method you used to build the Z in the back by cutting 22.5 from the centerline on both sides to give the perfect 45…awesome. Keep on keeping it real building the A.

 

Great episodes Sam. Can't wait for more!

 

What I really like, is doing this in a garage. No frame table, no laser,etc. Just regular hand tools. No exotic, over the top expensive stuff. I wonder how many critics have ever built a Hot Rod.

 

I'm enjoying the show, as much for the human element as the technical side.
I have great respect for all involved and look forward to seeing more.

maybe with a little context to prepare the viewer (me) I might have been there right with you tossing the column aside (off camera)
I mean what the hell was Ford thinking with that whole steering wheel, column, box contraption?
anybody that has worked on a closed car Model A knows they are stupid. it's like they held up a Rube Goldberg designed column and built a car around it. you practically have to remove the body to replace the horn ****on light switch rod thingamajig to take the wheel off..
and the box, the box is not fit for speed or longevity, remind me, do you have to pull the engine to get the box out of the frame? for a performance hot rod they are a piss poor choice to say the least. I have given them away, and gladly.

Thank You Sam for all the great tips, at 72 and a lifetime in the shop, I can still learn! I'm currently building my first actual hot rod and have learned that ignorance is not bliss. Glad the ch***is will have a new life, that speedster is very cool!

 

@SamIyam thanks for admitting feeling bad about the steering wheel even if it was for just a moment. But that moment of what you felt, that’s what came across on screen as a viewer.

 

Wasn't it only Sam tossing parts as a joke? I take it you don't watch DF's other YouTube content.

 

I thought it was pretty obvious you were doing it as a light-hearted joke. The build is so good, and thanks for giving us extra context.

I'd love to see some of the naysayers on camera.

Thanks Sam! Good stuff and a well crafted response. Too many keyboard warriors. I feel for the Sears Auto Center wrench. Not that I had to but I'd work 8a-5p M-F in my HS summers as a go-fer for a burglar alarm company (think of crawling attics in desert heat) then wrench at my comfy A/C bike shop job 6p-9p M-F + 9a-6p Sat + 10a-4p Sun. 70 hour weeks and rewarded while trying to break a crankset bolt loose with getting a sprocket tooth imbedded in your knuckle after it broke free - well that would send wrenches flying. I wanted to heave a part now and then, but usually these days just tools get flung out into the street.
The absolute best part is building that speedster with your kid. Priceless.

 

Dave was standing right there while Sam was tossing parts (and laughed about it), he certainly could have said something before the column got thrown.

 

That looks like another great project. What is the back seat are made up from? I guess as some would put it I just “destroyed” a 29 Tudor to build a speedster with. Looks like you have made great progress with your Son on that one.

 

I am glad we are following your story here on HAMB. It is interesting and if you can't keep it light hearted then why do it?! this is an interesting project.
Also...if you never have changed the starter on a 1962 Corvair with out any swearing or personal injury then you have never changed the starter on a 1962 Corvair !
