Hot Rods Historic Bonneville Race Car Found, The Losinski/Duncan/Chrisman roadster

That is one great roadster. Anything Art Chrisman was involved in is special.

I know that it's a dirty word on this site, but I hope you are thinking about restoring the car to its original race condition. The A.A.C.A. has a race car cl*** and at HERSHEY every year the original race cars do laps in the stadium. It's called the Race Car Condition Run and its held on Thursday morning during HERSHEY week. That car has history and deserves to be restored.

Hard to believe the trunk area was sealed but from the photos it doesn’t look removable. There is a cap on top I’m guessing for a water tank but everything must have been accessible from the driver compartment, under the car, or possibly thru the sides where the wheel wells are bolted instead of pressed like original.
Today the body would be illegal for any SCTA cl*** because the “bump” reveals on each side is not there. Just part of “original as manufactured” of the rule book.
A really neat part of history found. It would have great to have Art still with us to see it today.

 

I wish you’d restore it to the Ardun version.

I may do a desoto and an Ardun for it, right now the money isnt there for the Ardun, i will set it up like the Ardun was in it just like at 54 bonneville, and desoto will go it for a while.

 

Hitch a ride with the Union gang next year, take both engines in case you want to switch them on the salt, and you will be the hit of the week.

I bet your second Ardun won’t cost as much as your first.

 

Would love to see the picture recreated once the roadster is restored. IIRC, Bob Larivee hired Art Crisman to do the coupe resto, and I dearly hope someone will share the code for that beautiful bronze paint!

what are those original front tires? They look similar to Premium Sportway 5.20s

TBH, you should contact Ross and Beth Myers. It would be fitting for them to restore it back to the "177c" version when it was the "twin" of the coupe, which is currently in their collection. They'd certainly be capable of conducting an accurate nuts-and-bolts restoration on it and be good stewards of its history.

This is such a cool find, I 'bout spat my coffee out when I was watching Jeff's video on FB, looking at the details, the moulded roll bar and mention of chrome push-bars cutoff... oh ****! Photos confirmed my hunch, I am so F'kn stoked for Jeff what an icon to stumble upon. I really look forward to seeing this car return to its former glory, I have no doubt he'll do right. One day it would be amazing to see it reunited with its sibling the Chrisman Coupe but right now it is travelling its own path back into the spotlight.

Side note the 1954 Bonneville event was washed out due to a torrential downpour so likely the team never had the chance to complete the backup run after transplanting the Hemi.

ive been doing alot of research on it and digging thru all my Hot Rod magazines, its crazy how much it is in them! i found a very good article in one of them and had pretty much a day by day breakdown of bonneville racing, heres two excerpts on it…

further in the article (forgot to get a pic) it mentioned that i think on thursday or Friday 10 or so cars liner up to do runs, they ran their runs 3 cars had top speeds but werent able to make the back up runs or fast enough to set the record, i ***ume the roadster was one of then as it got a trophy for 174mph but did not set a record so i believe that was the hemi run, im hoping to find a more detailed article on it tho here are results from that event, ive seen a fee things referencing the 170 mph run and then a few references of the 174 mph run so im pretty certain it did both, 170 with ardun on first rum, melted down second run, 174 3rd rum with hemi, i will work on getting definitive proof of that of course…

I finally found a pic of the rear while randomly looking thru my hot rod magazine, i was looking for my 53’ hot rods and randomly grabbed a 55’ hot and there was a cool article about stripping…..

 

Jeff, I can't tell you how much I'm glad your the care taker of this roadster now.... I can't think of anyone having any more apriciation for it other than the fellas that raced it years ago. Ya did good.

 

i appreciate the thought but ill be handling it myself, its not very often a regular working man gets to own something like this, dream car, im a stickler for details and for things to be done correctly so ill have fun researching and tackling this project.

Seems like you've got solid do***entation to show that it ran the DeSoto engine in-period so I see no reason not to run one in the restored version. Sure, Arduns are cool and all but the DeSoto engine is every bit as important to the cars history as the Ardun was, not to mention the Ardun engine "dissolved into a blue-white cloud of smoke" (awesome quote) so it seems fitting to rebuild the car with the later engine.

 

Did Iron Trap give up those hood sides yet? Crazy cool find!!
