Technical 1939 chevy 216 to t5 conversion clutch disk

hello all, i went through the threads and cant seem to find an answer. Im doing a t5 swap to a 1939 216 with an adapter plate. Im unsure what clutch disk to order. its 9.125 14 spline 1 inch. will any disk that size work? are the disks all interchangeable if they are the correct size. The site that i purchased the adapter plate from specifies what clutch to use but its discontinued. Thanks

That should work, but with a caveat: Clutch disc construction varies a bit.

I have experienced instances where the springs in the hub protrude enough on the flywheel side to make contact.

I run a Mercedes clutch on my Ford. I had to do a little bit of lathe work to clear those springs.

It is impossible to say, but you might need to do that. Otherwise it should work fine.

 

Use the pressure plate that was in your car.
a clutch plate te same size and with the same spline size/count as the transmission input shaft.

 

So any clutch plate as long as its the same dimensions? I found one for a chevy astro van that has been suggested. its 104 dollars. the one i listed above is like 35 dollars. I'm just not sure they are exactly the same. They are the same dimensions though.

 

I believe that the Astro van disc was a larger diameter, like 10 inches.

 

The one I found is for older models. 9 inch. It fits s10 also. I'm being cheap. I don't know if I should buy the 30 dollars one on clearance or the 104 dollar one.

 

I used the small Astro van on mine with stock pressure plate. The Astro disc had a smaller center hub wich allowed the trans to engage fully. Some of the others I tried kept the trans about 1/2 inch from bolting up to the bellhousing.

 

I ended up ordering one listed for an 80s astro and s10. Hopefully it works out. The part that the company that makes the adapter suggests is no longer available. Dang. I hope this works. I want to make it as easy as possible for the shop.

 

I’ve found that early Chev and GMCs have clearance problems with the discs springs and the fly wheel bolts. I’m guessing your flywheel is on and tight; when you get your new disc set it on the flywheel and just move it back and forth it holding in on with the palm of your hand making sure it clears.
