Same guy that killed his father in Arizona because he didn't want to do the dishes. They evidently didn't keep him locked up long enough.

My daughter's boyfriend is a fire fighter in the Oregon forests (Detroit Lake). Those guys are earning their wages this year. We knew it would be a tinder box after such a dry winter. Mt Hood Meadows hardly had any ski days this year as a result of no snow fall. My daughter has season p***es and hardly got to use them.

She said the wind is expected to shift today to the east, that should clear the air on this side of the mountain. God bless the fire fighters and keep them safe.

 

Last night my cell-fone search lady voice said the Spokane fires were O% contained
.

Saw some pics of bunch of sub division tract homes all burnt down to the foundation, but the surrounding pine trees and trees were not burnt up. Thats odd....

 

Damn shame. Unfortunately the Northwest is a tinderbox.

 

I can’t wrap my head around how someone would do something so stupid/evil/crazy. He needs to be put away for sure.

Stay safe, we have a lot of the smoke from the fires up north here in the Yakima valley and from my house you can't see the foot hills 3 miles to the south or 5 miles to the North. Sitting here in the house on Wednesday I can taste the smoke and the closest fire of any size is the little Giant fire between Chelan and Leavenworth.

 

Damn.... Anyone know how Jim's doing..

 

The air quality here in Seattle is not good right now, you can taste the smoke in the air!

I feel for all that are going through wildfire ordeal, you dont even need the flames to make it horrible.
The smoke that lingers for days or weeks is in itself draining. I am in north east vic down under, we are in a very fire prone area, we have been lucky the last couple of years but the fires will be back at some stage.
If the smoke was a yearly thing I would move.
The other thing about being near a fire front is the waiting, the unknown, can be days, and the misinformation that gets going.
Someone mentioned it was odd that all the structures were burning but the forest was ok.
What can happen and does happen over here is when an area is evacuated ,resources are thin ,nobody around to put out a small fire on your deck started by embers etc, but sometimes you would be nuts to stay and fight it in our area

Im Ok. The firemen are amazing. they have held the line and are really keeping a good
Lid on this fire. We are still sitting in about the same distance as we have been. The level 3 evacuation zone is actually shrinking away from my place. I have a few people that I know in the area that lostbeverything, but so far I am out of harms way. Knock on nonflammable wood.

Fire, anywhere is a dangerous and awful thing. In our neck of So Cal, fires are a commonplace. The dry scrub that was here before all of us had its own way back then. Some burns are natural, while others are set by somc crazy folks. Some are accidents, but they all are devastating.

Since our son was born, we decided to try and save our family photos for safe keeping. But, it was an impossible task. Who is going to carry out 10 thick photo albums. When in the process, the dog, the wife and kid, are more important. Jump up many years and now the grandchild is in the picture… pun intended.

So, what to do? Our son told my wife and I when we were taking care of our granddaughter in her early stages to grab her, and 15 thick photo albums to run out or the house. I looked at the 15 thick photo albums and said to myself, those are now on the “lost in the fire” category. The grand child is number 1 then the wife and then the little dog. What becomes of the furniture, clothes and other paper work that has been in closets, desks and drawers? If they are in metal drawers, they might have a chance to survive. They can be replaced. Paper work can be copied to the hard drives.

So, as our son was telling us what to do, again, I devised a way to help save those 15 photo albums. And our photos in the same time. Small portable disk hard drives that fit in our pockets or definitely in a “Go Bag.” We have saved our valuable films and photos in digital form and have copied all of the old photos that are not digital. Now, they all have become digital in this age and they are all saved on a 5tb small, external hard drive.

Those small hard drives all fit in a small bag as copied files. The original ones are still on our laptop and home hard drive. but, the exact copies are saved for eternity. What about the camera files and phone photos? The camera files are on the computers. The phone photos are on the cloud for apple and for my android, instantly transferred to the laptop photo files.

If you have the original photos on your computer and the hard drive says over half full, then it is time to get a larger external hard drive. Western Digital, Seagate, and San Disk are the top three companies that are long time hard drive builders. Toshiba has a ton of drives that are good and low cost, too. We have several of each company for back up to a back up. Stay away from non descript companies as they probably make a good drive, but the long time companies have a solid program going and failure is not part of that game.

We have ten year old drives still working and waiting to be reused if needed. We gave a few to our granddaughter to erase and store her filming and files as she went away to college. So, they can be cleaned and reused again. Stay away from photobucket and smugmug. Do your own thing. It is a simple copy and paste to move your photos to the external hard drive.

This is the easiest way to preserve your own family history. No one wants to carry 15 thick photo albums to the car, when more important things are necessary… photos are family history and needs to be preserved.


For you folks that do not want to spend $200 for a 5 tb drive, then try the 4tb drive that is offered. I have two old Toshiba drives that have been working for years without any problems.

Once every two weeks, I update the files to the external hard drives ever since our near fire miss when our granddaughter was spending a few days at our house. One night, we all heard the rumbling of heavy trucks on our street. it was put off as the late trash trucks, again. But, our granddaughter went to the door and stepped out to see what was making that big noise.

Much to her (and our) surprise, the sky to the south was bright orange and she could see flames shooting in the air. The local sheriff’s patrols were going back and forth, but the evacuation call did not come, as yet. So, we all stood there watching the flames and the fire trucks on the high ridgeline fighting the flames. Now, that was my time to get the “Go Bag” front and center, by the house exit to the garage door.

Inside were a change of clothes for all of us and three small external hard drives. Two were 4 tb units at the time. There were several bottles of water and some snacks. We were ready and waiting for the evacuation notice by the local sheriff’s department… which never came. We all went to sleep prepared, but slept through the night.

Note: in the morning, the fire departments were still there doing the last minute fire sprays with water. Little to no smoke was seen. All was ok, this time. Thank goodness for the fire departments of the local So Cal coastal communities all pitching in to put down the fire. YRMV

These are the three best options for most folks.

I hope you are aware that hard drives can and do degrade over time causing data loss. Some don't realize this is a very real possibility and think that their data is safe indefinitely when on a hard drive whe it isn't.

Yes, we all know that side of electronics and hard drives. We have some 5 year old external hard drives with tons of storage left and the original copies are still functioning well. They can be called up to make good prints or print out files for the tax guy or other needs.

We are always buying top listed external hard drives and the only reason we get newer ones is that the old
2 tb hard drives got too full and now there was a need for a new 4 tb hard drive... Then years down the line, the 4 tb hard drive was getting into the last openings of the disc and so, several new 5tb hard drives were now being used.

We still take family photos and of old cars we see locally. They still get saved to the hard drives in our
"go bag" and in our safe deposit box. So, if it is necessary , our son and granddaughter know where to go to get the files saved.

So far, none of the 5 to 8 year old external hard drives still in use have failed. Our granddaughter now has our old 2 and 4 tb hard drives for saving her college files and papers. Still in use and still going strong. YRMV

No worries, there are back ups to the back ups for safety reasons. We are covered well.

 

Well, the news just said that we are looking at 30 mph winds again this weekend. Pray for spokane, this is an ugly situation.

I am out and about every day.
About 30% of folks are masked up
due to poor air quality and precaution.
Minimal containment on fires.

Praying for rain in the Northwest.

 

Well, today has been a blessing. We did not get the wind we were supposed to get. The firemen are knocking down the fires and all is as well as can be expected. Now its time for me look into how to donate to all that have lost so much. This is a horrible ordeal and I am hoping that the worst is behind our little city.

 

The old trails fire in Spokane shows that the one thing wrong with living in a place where it is cool to have a house out in the wooded area on the edge of the city is that fires in those wooded areas are hard to put out and spread fast especially when they are pine trees. It doesn't help that they were intentionally set by a demented individual either though.
