Technical Is this supposed to be like this?

Took this yesterday of one of the cars at a local cruise night. I just noticed that it seems the entire brake drum is sitting outside of the rim/wheel. Is this “normal”?

 

No.

 

It’s done a lot, but my thought is the front end geometry is whacked.

 

In a perfect situation the kingpin axis would run through the centerline of the tire where it meets the pavement. That is rarely the case in the real world but extreme cases like this can produce undesirable effects in terms of wear and handling.

 

One of my pet peeves. I see this...and I'm not interested in looking any further.

It's kind of a catch-22 sitiation.
They're supposed to be mostly inside the wheel for proper geometry. But that's no good when you wanna show off your beautifully polished finned aluminum Buick brake drums! So lotsa guys forsake good geometry for looks. But they're breaking the rule about form follows function and I think it looks dumb. That one is extreme though. I think it has adapters/spacers which makes it worse.

 

Really messes up the scrub radius.

 

He is running too big ( thick) of a wheel spacer/ adapter for the 35 wheels to clear the Buick drums

You guys ever actually driven a car that violates your "scrub rule"? I have and it will drive circles around most of you. I don't run spacers, but my knockoff wheel adapters help push the wheels out past the "scrub" axis. It turns well, steers well, been faster than most of you will go, it is stable and fun to drive. Just sayin

You’re not supposed to do it according to the experts but I’ve never seen any adverse effects in normal driving

I’m sure it has issues in extremes in an engineers simulation software
But I’ve never seen those extremes duplicated outside the program

 

Of course, it’s 3 am, can’t sleep, and this pops up in my FB feed. Haha!

You don't need to have experienced it to learn it. But you can definitely experience it and still not learn it.

 

It can't be much different then all the big 4x4 trucks running around with the wide wheels and tires out side the fenders. How many low riders running around have the correct wheels? bet not many of them.

Mine. Deep Lincoln backing plates with an about 1/2” spacer. F1 wheels.
