Customs Did this ever happen to you?

Having grown up in Covina and crewing on a Fuel Altered driven by a mechanic at Russ Davis Ford I have a soft spot for Gaspar's Tbolt. I was doing a work experience cl*** at the Chevy dealer across the street but usually at Russ Davis being a fly on the wall when Gas and Skip Burroughs (the altered driver who became Gas' crew chief) were talking. Gas got the Tbolt while at Downtown Motors then brought it to Russ Davis and painted it orange, He came to Covina to be nearer Les Richey (in Glendora) who was prepping his car. Build yours as Gas' car you won't need to repaint it. But if you do you'll need to use the ugly squarish bump on the hood not the later teardrop it got at Russ Davis.

 

I've got to agree with this. Having owned over 150 cars which one was the favorite to replace. My first the 28 Dodge I swapped my 1/4 midget for when in 8th grade? The first new one a 70 Road Runner? One of the Shelbys or Vettes? One of the euro cars? One of the race cars? We still have a 98 Cobra Mustang for canyon carving and a full tube 650 horse 1995 GT1/TA Mustang for track fun. So I went in a new direction and bought a Model A coupe. Still having fun and more importantly new experiences with cars.

I dont really have a dream car in particular
For me the work is the dream. Worked on and helped built lots of others peoples dream cars.
I grew up with log amd dump trucks so my beater 61 c40 scratched that itch.
Several of my relatives had school bus campers.
I cruise a dropped short bus now
Had a slammed mini truck during that craze right after high school.
Still like em as low as I can get em.
Early on I attended a show where a merc was. Long fat and on the ground. Coolest thing I ever saw.
My relatives often remind me of a story when I was asked what I wanted to be. A 5-6 year old me said I wanted to be a junkyard man. Never owned one officially but I’v had a lot of junk in the back yard and a small shop full of ****.

Wile I am a fan of the Tbolts my thing is the Fairlane, mine has an un cut body with a very strong 292”/289 just the way I like it with no Tbolt influence present. Little more than 2800lbs and 455hp should be a fun grocery getter.

 

Hey Dan, it sounds to me like you have nothing to regret. Your Dad did exactly what he wanted to do with his money/estate. I would guess that it made him immensely content to be able to leave what he did for you. For some, selflessness is a way of life. You should be proud (and I am sure you are) of the man and father he was, and know that it was his wish to do what he did. It probably gave him more happiness than any car or holiday ever could.

 

I'm always looking for my next dream car. But don't tell my cars...or my wife.

No, It is still in existence, it hasn't seen daylight in 50 years or so. part that burns my ****, the guy who has it is closing in on 90. He's not physically able to do anything with it, but won't part with it. That's his right, when he dies nobody in his family is interested in it. You think he'd like to p*** it on to some people( mostly east coast) who would appreciate it and become it's new care taker. Whatever! I'm just saying

 

Sounds to me like you need to figure out who gets the truck after the old man dies. Sometimes, being the guy that has shown an interest is the first guy contacted when the estate settles.

It was not anywhere near the value of the truck you love, but years ago I got an old truck, and 3 other old vehicles because his wife remembered me talking with the old guy and expressing an interest in the truck, a few months before he died.

 

All good choices. That '56 Ford truck is pretty mild and looks like it could be recreated on much less of a budget than the others. How about a tribute build, or something like it, but with your personal touches?

 

I agree with 1pickup, find a nice 56, have it lowered and painted, and enjoy it. That is a beautiful truck!
