    With regards to early ford engines and filters
    When running the old non detergent oils, the design was the dirt was deposited into the oil pan, ie sludge. Periodic cleaning was required. But in reality the engine needed overhaul before that.
    With detergent oil the dirts floats in the oil, and that’s when they started using filters.

    Maybe, but I am not sure. That would take some testing.

    Pressure may be a problem, unless the pump is shimmed/modified. The typical Saginaw P-pump, depending on configuration, puts out somewhere between 1,200 to 1,450 PSI at 2.5 to 3.5 GPM

    That pressure would fragment all known oil filters. Putting the filter on the return side might stop it from scavenging properly.

    Pressure regulation is by byp***. Excess pressure is bled back to the reservoir. Reducing pressure via conventional means would have the oil going round and round in the pump.

    That aside, power steering fluid is between ISO 32 and ISO 46, which is roughly 5W to 10W on the SAE scale. Old school ATF, sometimes used for power steering fluid, is about 7.5 on the SAE scale.

    Weight and viscosity wise, it should work. There are Saginaw P-pump housings that are made for remote reservoirs, and that have AN/JIC fittings in and an adapter for out. I have one on my Falcon.

    Run the pressure side to a remote filter housing, and then back to the pan.

    The inlet is a generous -10AN, with the option of -12AN. The adapters for the pressure side are most often -6AN.

    AN and JIC are dimensionally interchangeable with the same number. -6AN is dimensionally the same as JIC-6.

    For maximum safety, you can build, or have built crimped hydraulic hoses.

    While it might be possible to put this together, it might not work as well as desired.

    I will need to model this.

    The pressure generated is dependent on pushing against a mechanism. Without the mechanism present, the performance will be very different.

    If the filter is on the inlet side, and an open hose back to the pan is on the pressure side, it might work.

    Much to figure. May messes to be made.

    Ok “gimpyshotrods” you know power steering pumps I do not. Good info, just trying to think of cheap small available pump might work. That why ended note with ????

    Helped/watched guy build dry sump sprint car with DIY oil pump. First fire up blew oil lines off tank & lot of oil onto garage floor. Still interesting project for a flathead

    What type of pump ?
    Generally dry sump 10-15 psi @ idle
    To blow hose A/N Jic pressure must of been over 150 psi unless hose's not ***emble correctly

    I wonder if any have experiment with
    polishing ,Knife edge crank lighting crank or the roughness helps sling oil ?

    Also hard to believe the F-H oiling can not be improved with a internal or external pump along with oil Gallies,
    The F-H over 70 yrs older then I .

    but
    With regards to my statement, this comes from old timers I have been around
    When I first picked up my roadster with a v8 flathead, it didn’t have a filter.
    I found an original canister by-p*** style that was an option for the flathead ford.
    Installed it with an orifice as recommended and there was a nil effect on the oil pressure.

    Builder had machined pump with 2 gears pulling oil from engine to large tank with inch maybe 1 1/2 inch hose. Other side of pump from tank to engine same design. Do not remember exact fitting on tank maybe just hose clamp. First start up hose off tank pumped oil to floor. No idea what pressure was. Redesign drive system to lower pressure.

    Has anyone ever considered using an oil spinner type filter? I hear they are very efficient. I know some big diesels use them.

    I would think that others where considering non oem style cartridges,
    of Pre 60's saying no gain / filtration.

    There are Cartridge high flow element & micron's.

    I think many just stick to automotive use in stead of other use's & part's .
    Industrial ,Marina ,Aviation ,Heavy as options

    Perfect filter kit for Billy. Chrome-plated too. If there's room, double dispenser would look great next to chrome plated master cylinder.

    I will. I like the AC Declo piece I bought, easy to find replacement and just $6.00.

    I had a bit of an oil leak getting it started back up after painting that pan. The breather leaked like a sieve. I welded a baffle inside the pan as well as nuts to make R&R easy, the result was a less than flat surface for that breather. I built a gasket and used RTV, let it sit overnight and still leaked. I bought some Permatex called Right Stuff with a one minute return to service. I ditched the paper gasket, squirted out a bead around the breather and stuck it on. Fired it up one minute later and no leaks. Took it for a drive, feels great and best part...no leaks.

    I did receive a tracking number for a new (to me) Merc pan from one of our own. I look forward to prepping it for chrome and getting it dipped. Those big Merc pans do not need to be modified to clear the Melling pump I am using. BTW, the hi-volume pup measures 5 5/8th from the pan rail to the bottom of the pump. The Merc pan measures 7". I won't be adding the breather to it since I have the PCV system.

    I am considering all the comments regarding filtration. I read once that it takes like 15 miles at 2000 RPM to cycle the oil through the filter. Is that correct? I mean, around town, is it really doing anything other than providing piece of mind? Perhaps I got that stat wrong, it seems ridiculous. Probably my bad, don't quote me..

    I do not see that with a non by p*** or maybe even a byp*** & @ even 10psi .
    I would say you could pump 5 qt in few mints @ idle 3/16 hole
    If true taken 15mile's I am clue less to .

    I did note that my beehive oil filter on my roadster does get quite hot. To me that says it must be getting plenty of oil going through it. If only a dribble it wouldn't be as hot.

    Not sure with a flathead v8, but here is some info regarding more modern filtration systems.

    Yes , in a full-flow system, which is what virtually all modern petrol and diesel engines use, every drop of oil p***es through the filter media every time it circulates through the engine. At idle, a typical engine might circulate its full oil volume several times per minute, meaning the filter is working continuously from the moment you start the engine to the moment you switch it off.
