Technical Model B in a Ford model A; removal of clutch housing from model B oil pan

Ever since about half an hour after I hastely and impatiently cut my first model B oil pan, to remove the clutch housing, I’ve regretted not taking more time to do a nicer job.
Today I did a better job, although still forgetting to wedge the clutch housing until the last couple of spot welds were drilled out. I uploaded a video to y-t, a quick explaination of, how I should have done, and how I fitted the clutch housing to my model A engine.

I have an A engine that I want to use a B bellhousing on to fit the B transmission. Would the operation that you did be best, or could I just use the whole B pan and fill the crank cap cutout to fit the A size? Could I fit the A windage tray into the B pan easily?

  3. That’s what I did too.
It depends on your fabrication skills. In my case, I still need to close the gaps and maybe weld in the pieces, I cut out, for stability. If you want to fill the crank cap cutout to A size in a B oil pan, I was thinking to cut them from an A oil pan, to get the sealing lips correct dimensions; you also need to check, if bolt holes align- as I recall, there are some differences.
What do you mean by “fit the A windage tray into the B pan”, @alchemy? :)

Wow, what an undertaking—I hadn't realized the difference between Model A and Model B was so significant.

I'll probably catch hell for this but I left the B flywheel cover seperate. On my Winfield A engine I use a B transmission. The engine has an A oil pan, upper B flywheel housing and the lower section of a B oil pan that acts as a shield only. I never connected it to the A oil pan. I filled in the small gap with a rubber seal and have been using it that way for years. I also fun a B front engine mount and a 32 K member.

I was told there is a difference between the A and B drip trays in the pans. I wondered if they were easy to change out (or even required).
