Technical Auto zone Duralast Batteries quality?

Who has had these??...Are AutoZone Duralast batteries.... Good Quality or Bad?

Ive never had them before., But Im thinking Duralast might be good and last a long time???

I found that AutoZone Duralast batteries group 65 is the only one that still has the removable caps for servicing/maintenance. Cool....

Pretty much all I use. No issues with the auto batteries, or the deep cycles I have for the tractor and forklift.
I know other like the Walmart batteries, but AZ is more convenient for me.

 

I also use them in most of my old cars. The ones I drive last past the warrantee. The seldom used cars I charge the batteries a few times a year and those usually go bad right before the warrantee so I get a free one that'll last just about as long as the constant use. Talking about the duralast golds.

 

Been using that same battery for 20 years. They've been good to me. Starts my car every time throughout the season and put on a trickle charger for the long winters. I get about 7-8 years out of them.

 

I had bad experiences with two of their batteries. Both were for OT cars. I still use Die Hard batteries. Never had a problem with them.

I'm getting tired of having battery problems. My deuce pickup has an Odyssey 1100 that's been there for 7-8 years. I just put the same thing in the new roadster and plan on doing the same with the 3 window I'm staring on. Pricey but seem to be tough and can be mounted in any position. One in the pickup is under the seat laying flat. Optima used to my go to battery but they seem to be slipping quality wise?

 

What the **** is a 'woke' battery? I thought this place was a politics-free zone?

Little known fact, Home Depot sells EXIDE auto batteries at very compe***ive prices. Usually located near front wall and often out of sight.

 

I have over two hand full of batteries name previous mentioned
On a DD Really no issue ,
The one's started every 2-3 weeks it 50/50 even with power disconnect,some will not even charge back up with Trinkle charger std, amg & lithium charger .
I have 2 Ultima's that are 20 yrs old still will take charge after 6 plus month No use , other Ultimas will Not .
So its 50/50

I doubt most of us buy more than a couple a year, and each car will have different drains and charges, plus what was true 3 years ago may not apply now.
Talk about something that was fairly limited in sizes and capacity, there are a ton of different ones now.

As @eaglebeak mentions, there are only a few actual manufacturers who produce all the different brands in most cases.

 

I have found if you never run your battery dead, it will last for years. Run it dead once, and it will never be the same. That's why in the cars I store I have trickle chargers if the battery is not disconnected. On the ones that I disconnect I charge every 2 months.

 

With the way stuff is getting cheaper, look at the warranty and how easy it is to get a replacement. That would be my first measure. Some great battery that has an offshore phone line and requires original paper receipt in only 6 warranty locations isn't going to be a choice.

 

Ive not found much difference in the cheap batteries vs more expensive ones recently. So I buy the cheapest one I can find usually from walmart these days.

 

Ever been at the back of the chain store when a battery is bought?
They have a box full of stickers that match the battery you get depending on price (warranty)

 

If it ain't an emergency, I like to drive a little ways to a branch of this semi-local battery chain store. One of those newish places. Last time I was there, with a low key complaint, realized that the receipt I looked all over for was already in the guy's computer. I'd never really realized that every time I'd bought something that saved all that info when I paid. Guy checked out the battery I brought in, went back and got another and wrote something on it and typed on his keyboard. No problem, no money or receipt needed......just your debit card or maybe ID.

Yeah, that is typical these days, provided you don't mind them having your name address, phone #, etc.
I added that because it seems some places will have strange policies to avoid doing warranty, like asking for some thermal paper that was left in the car over the summer!

 

Overpriced and not worth it. Used them at work (one common group size we used was the 65) and they didn’t last as well as others. Went to Napa brand (which are so so). I use Interstate in my cars from Costco. Used Interstate for decades at other places I worked at. Last place had a great supervisor that thought he was getting a deal by buying those 2 brands, all he succeeded at doing was buying cheaper quality at higher prices.

What vehicle batteries are made in the US?

 

Had to replace a battery back in 2000, on Labor Day weekend. It died in the Sam's Club parking lot, just after they closed for the holiday Friday afternoon. Fortunately the Auto Zone clear across the shopping center parking lot was open. I walked over to the store, explained my predicament and the guys not only sold me a battery but drove over to my car and installed it. That battery lasted nearly 12 years and I replaced it with another Duralast Gold battery - bought from the same guys who came to my rescue more than a decade earlier.

 

Apparently, there are only 2 companies that actually manufacture car batteries. Clarios and East Penn Manufacturing. Everyone from Interstate to Duralast and even WalMart source their batteries from these 2 companies then slap their names on 'em. Food for thought.

3 major companies of lead acid. The 3rd is Stryten Energy. The battery type is all the same (lead acid), but the design might be slightly different (some have more or less plates and some have different style of plates). It's just like overseas parts, the company dictates what they want to the manufacture (quality, design and price).

 

You can basically get any ‘grade’ battery from either East Penn ( Deka ) or Johnson Controls ( Interstate ) wherever you go.. want cheap. Every brand is going to have a cheap option. Every brand is going to have an expensive option. I usually get Walmart batteries but if I need a battery and I’m not near or want to make that trip, I generally go to Advance auto and buy what they have… My 6v batteries come from TSC though. Napa carries them too but much more expensive.

 

Johnson Controls spun off their battery division and it is now known as Clarios. Along with East Penn, they are one of two primary Sealed Lead Acid (SLA/AGM) battery manufactures in the US.

TPPL (Thin Plate Pure Lead) batteries are primarily made by EnerSys (Interstate, Odyssey, and NexSys brands), Hawker PowerSource and Stryten Energy. TPPL batteries are more often found in commercial applications (think big trucks, construction equipment, and stand-by power banks) were as automotive sticks with SLA and AGM style batteries, but there is crossover in form factors. TPPL batteries typically have a higher energy density and charge quicker.

I always go for the best balance of price and warranty.

As far as how ' good' a battery is its such a pot luck draw as to how well they have been handled at the retailer, kept charged, how long they sat on the shelf etc etc.
