Not all aftermarket inserts are bad, I have a "Dales" and its the best around. Heavy, compared to other inserts. Those two black shells look like Vintique, but could be wrong. Left one just looks new....

There's details at the lower bottom and on the backside ext to determine if original or repo.
Other will likely chime in .
Search on net will have details.
If Dales closes to a Original

It looks VERY original to me with rust in the corners and cut outs, I just don't know what it's worth, I don't want to over pay.

Is he wanting original Henry Ford price for the shell, it looks good and has the correct holes on the inside beside the crank hole, but seeing the sides and inside would help. HRP

The best way to tell is photos of the outside and inside of the lower back corners. Repros never get the mounting for the stainless band correct.

I’m guessing the appeal of an original shell on this site, would just be for fit?

This guy on Ebay wants a fortune for his but does have good photos for you to see some of those little details that guys mention that tell real from the two repros I have. eBay item number:278172811651

I'd have to go pull it out of storage but I have a Brookville roadster "blem" (scratched by trash in the die) that I don't believe has these details at the bottom corner. Screenshot (4062).png

Yup, the devil’s in the details. Adds a x10 to the price. If a guy doesn’t care, then happy for him. But those of us that do, we do. You just have to decide which side you stand on.

If its an after market insert, and original shell, tough to hit the 1800 value... unless it's a Dales insert. They were the best ever made, and not made anymore. The horse collar does look original, with the broken tip and chrome blistering. What kind of fella has the parts? You can kinda "read the room" by looking at their garage and other vintage parts laying around.

One thing I noticed on my shells was the crisp stamping detail of the bead around the edges near the top and side hoods. First 3 pics are original shells, last 2 pics are vintique shell, has more of a fillet or radius... not crisp stamping. 20260821_232401.jpg 20260821_232503.jpg 20260821_232522.jpg
