California bureaucrats think they should control what tires you buy for your daily driver or weekend hot rod.

I read that yesterday, I don’t think it will affect older vehicles, the part that says along the lines tires must meet or exceed “insert number” the rolling resistance as sold new.
How would they determine the rolling resistance of a tire on a 1962 Chevy?

 

Hot Rod seems to be pearl-clutching and contradicting themselves. For example, they imply that you won't be able to drive your car to an autocross, but "Compe***ion tires designed for motorsports" is stated as an exemption to the rule. What is the rolling resistance on your current tires? AI says the average is 7-11 N/kN, so CA wants 9 to be the standard, then move to 7... both within the average range now. This will mean that manufacturers will improve their design, not make tires unavailable.

 

California used to be the mecca of the hot rod world now Texas and Tennessee are taking a big chunk of it its BS like this thats chasing people away.

I would think a couple of the exemptions will reduce your worries: they need to be better than the original tires, and anything produced in quan***ies less than 15,000 don’t matter. Every hot rodder is putting better tires on than Henry Ford did, or else it was produced by Coker in a small quan***y. Now you are free and clear.

 

That’s just a crybaby opinion piece, the list of exceptions is a lot longer than I would have guessed it would be and it literally addresses his concerns towards the end of his *****ing and moaning rant. It likely only applies to modern new cars anyway which is what most of the population drives.

 

It sounds like all I have to do is buy tires comparable to what's already on my daily drivers.

It states “low production (15,000 year)” as exempt. So hopefully that might apply to something like bias or bias looking radials. If you use regular radials then I think the cheap ones will be gone. The off road crowd has someone in their corner as a lot those were exempt (if rated under 99mph).

 

All this law states is that new tires have to be the same rolling resistance as the tires the car came with from the factory. I would be amazed if they even still or ever had that information on the cars we deal with. OEM's often use proprietary tires to help meet their fuel efficiency standards that the tire manufacturers don't necessarily offer to the general pubic as aftermarket tires. This has pretty much nothing to do with the cars this board deals with.

 

Then they really wouldn't like these me guesses!

 

I wish Tennessee was taking a big chunk of the hotrodding scene! Anymore Knoxville Sux for vintage car happenings. The governing body of the city would rather have a “pride parade “ instead of yucky old cars. HELP US ! Hot rodders please move here!

If anyone in the country thinks this law is going to change the car culture in California they don’t have a clue what guys do here with their cars… new or old, foreign or domestics, parking lots are full every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all over the state.

99% of us have tires we throw away from under use; my 15 year old Diamond Backs have less than 10,000 miles on them and I drive my Ford every weekend. Tires are the least of my worries.

2yrs ago there was rumor of “no insurance” was going to be available (like Grundy and others would let this market stop) and every old guy said go ahead Cali….. we will all self insure by posting a bond.

As long as there are old guys with $$$$$ there will hot rods, muscle cars, low riders, etc in California.

 

I was just thinking the other day we were about due for another stupid law for cars.

I'm with @Hellfish. Another layer of bureaucracy to navigate for the OEMs which they will no doubt take in stride, with the final burden probably falling on the retail sellers. The real key will be enforcement; I seriously doubt that LEOs will have any appe***e for being the tire police added to their duties. And it will probably drive some of the cheap import tires out of the local market.

I would be curious to know what the rational for doing this was. Did they have real data, or was this dreamed up in some ivory tower? Or some sort of 'back door' attack on performance cars? But keep in mind that when CAFE standards were introduced the same panic ensued but finally produced 400+ HP sub-13 second street cars that could knock down 25 MPG on the freeway, all while avoiding the 'guzzler' taxes. Progress is sometime painful...

I'm in California and we have to put up with all kinds of stupid sh!t. High gas taxes and high energy prices, high registration fees, high sales taxes, smog laws that make no sense....and on and on.
This law like so many others, makes nearly zero sense. It has been do***ented that keeping tires inflated at near maximum pressure yield significant fuel mileage gains. In fact I've experienced that with my Ol' Furd.
Yet "Un Car" people roll around with low pressure, with the warning light on the dash glowing, with keeping the tires properly inflated the last thing on their mind. Will this law change that behavior? I think not.
Simply another bureaucratic ploy to extract more money.

 

Compared to 30s technology tires, they probably are worlds better. Can you imagine putting some bias ply 17 inch tires like that most likely had as oem? Oh, and carry your patch kit, including the hot vulcanizer, some patch material, the goo, and a little bit of extra gasoline to make it all work, cuz you’re going to be patching tires every time you hit a pothole that the government is supposed to be repairing.
