At night you do. NVG's are not as good as thermals to spot them when moving through the desert at night. There are more there than you think.

 

I’d like to see this pic, if it’s one of this car. Looks to be a good side shot.

 

Looks like a m***ive amount of work, even if you want to keep most of it looking run down and neglected as it is. I'm not sure leaving delaminated gl*** is a good idea, and definitely not a safe idea! Not only will it restrict vision, but if it comes apart while you're driving down the road it could result in an accident hurting the driver, or others. Some things need to be replaced.

 

I would think his sawzall batteries would have recharged by now…also a couple profile pictures, might quell some of the doubts… it’s a cool ‘32, but right now it’s like a fish on the line; that you are only getting glimpses of!

6shooter , I for one hope you save it and get it back on the road . Get rid of what isn’t safe , make it yours and drive it .

 

Built sometime before 1958, that tubing runs from the firewall, inside the frame rails, over the hump, and out the rear pan... I was thinking that it was his way of stiffening the frame... way before P&J boxing plates...
there is a hole in each, past the rear panels/ grille area... I thought one bolt through each could've been a quick rear bumper removal...
Then I realized that the tubing was also the exhaust...

I think that the two rear tube shocks are laid down pretty flat, so not so much for suspension travel, but to keep the rearend centered? I'm just guessing here...
I am sure that the PO that I got this 5W from, did not / could not have thought / designed / built this suspension,,, he was in high school... I'm not knocking him, but I just don't think that he could've been the designer / engineer / fabricator...

I cannot imagine him. / anyone in their backyard with a hacksaw, cutting out the bracket mounting for the banjo...
Or welding everything together...

 

The grille was not attached / bolted down to anything... I think that it might be a 34 35 Chevy commercial/ truck grille... but I'm really guessing here... I've asked some guys with early Chevy stuff and cannot get a good answer...

What I said about the last owner designing this 5W... the headlights are mounted on flatstock bent 90°... which is fine... it worked, it's simple, and got the job done... it's all I would expect for the time and his experience... he was in high school and did not have alot of money... but he was able to drive it for five or six years...

 

The front frame horns were cut and pinched, so I'm guessing that there was a track nose at one time...
Also there is a panel underneath which has somehow gathered alot of dirt and rocks...
And a tach drive mounted on the front crossmember...
If you look at the pics of the reared, you can see part of / what's left of the louvered bellypan...

So, have you dragged it home, yet? Yes, it’s a project, but with some cautious cleanup and dissection there could be a great starting point. Maybe it could use another frame, after the body removal.. To get the project rolling (pun intended)

I was thinking the same thing.
It looks like there was some very creative suspension designing going on. I can't imagine it was very fun to drive. That may be why it appears there were a lot of things added to the suspension...

6 Shooter, if you intend to actually drive this, that de-laminated gl*** has to go.
If its going to be a static display, I think I would still be replacing it, I wouldn't want to worry about someone getting cut badly when that gl*** falls apart..
