UTQG began ~`80, so don't worry about... well anything.

Started to read a different article earlier and it's only going to apply to new vehicles... seven years into the future.

So what might happen is certain vehicles will no longer have stupid wheel size options, 'your Toyota Prius doesnt need 19" wheels sir.' And maybe hybrids/fuel economy vehicles will also be limited in wheel size and/or tire options that promote emmm peee geees.

FWIW, the last generation Ford Fusion hybrid could be optioned with 16-19" wheels.
Rotational weight is a *****, tire tread(radial belts) are going to be in the same place for a given diameter, can't get around that. But replacing metal with air, and sidewall rubber, does wonders for acceleration, unsprung weight, and emmm peee geees.

 

The bill is about the sale of tires. Enforcement will be aimed at distributors and retailers. The devil is, as usual, in the details. Some online outlets may simply stop selling tires to California, particularly if tires are a small fraction of their overall sales (i.e. Jegs, Speedway, Summit). The cost of compliance will, of course, be p***ed on to consumers.
How the exemptions are written will determine if they actually exempt anything. If they decide that DOT drag radials, DOT autocross tires, and road-legal off-road tires are used on the road excessively, they may declare the exemption doesn’t apply. Is the 15,000 number worldwide production or U.S. sales? Some imported tires, like the Excelsior, have significant sales in Europe.
If I put my tin hat on, I can see where they could use the lack of tire data to restrict or outright ban use of older cars. There are already attempts in other states to get pre-2009 cars off of the road.
In the end, it may be horrible or Much Ado About Nothing. I’m not betting my lunch money on the latter.

I've read it twice now and this is jack***ery at its finest.

This is even sillier than I thought.

Someone had a real hard on for this program that does... Nothing.

Correction, it will cost consumers more.
