Projects Chevy Orange?

That ****ing thing is creepy!

 

It's a valid color for the time period this forum is focused on. As you've mentioned, the reasons to choose Chevy Orange to paint engines that aren't exactly thoroughbreds from the early days are obvious. It adds a touch of "correct" where it helps.

Reading through the thread here, I'm guessing the Dupli Color Chevy Orange is the factory color, and Orange -Red is not? I want to paint the sheet metal pieces for my bellhousing. Or are they supposed to be black? The whole engine and bell were supposedly painted together. 55 Chev.

 

It's been a few decades, but the inspection covers I remember messing with were black IIRC. Of course that doesn't mean they left the factory that way.... and they weren't on '55.
So, yeah, I'm no help but good luck all the same.

Whatever you do, don’t make the mistake I did and use Rustoleum “Orange”. It’s much too pale. It bothers me but not enough to fix it!

 

Looks good! Do you have the heater parts? Yours had the deluxe heater.

 

Thank you, I do! I actually plan on rebuilding the heater as a fall project so that I can keep driving it until the roads are salted!

 

That fresh air unit is far superior to the cheap heater in mine. Basically a box inside with a core that pulls air from inside the car. It's fine for my spring & fall stuff.
Now about those wipers..

 

When I got paint for the 327 I put together last year, The farm store I went to had New Kubota Orange and Old Kubota Orange. This is the New version. I used tractor paint so I could add hardener, sprayed.

Man... The wiper motor on this car is keeping me from getting them working. I have rebuilt it and tried to seal it up the best I can with silicone, but it still doesn't work! I'm surprised there hasn't been a reasonably priced electric wiper conversion made yet for these kind of applications. The only thing I could find was for a Willys jeep and it didn't seem like it would fit.

 

Have you tried Newport?

 

Huh, I hadn't heard of them before. Thank you for the heads up. Probably a little more than I'd want to spend on a mostly summer car that I try to keep dry due to already existing rust but it's nice to know there's a company actually making electric wiper replacements!

 

Paint it anything but orange and people might actually look at it.

 

All you guys must have had the BIG 64 color Crayola boxes when you were going to school. I could only afford the 8 color box.

 

Supposedly Kioti Orange is a perfect match for Chevy engine orange. It is similar to Kubota Orange, but has a little more red in the pigment.

And, since we seem to be going all over the spectrum with the color Orange, there's Swamp Holly Orange. It was developed by E. I Du Pont in 1929 for A.J. Harrell, the owner of The Yellow Corporation, most recently known as Yellow Transportation. That's a pretty long run for a color that identified a company. In my opinion, it's every bit as ugly as Chevy Orange, and it didn't help their trucks run any faster either. See next post.

It's baffling that a company with yellow in its name would paint its trucks orange.

I had an orange '65 Mus****, but Ford called it Poppy Red.

It all started with Cleve Harrel, A.J.'s older brother. Cleve started the Yellow Cab Company in Oklahoma City with a team of horses and a wagon. By 1918, he had three Model T's and painted one of them yellow. Next thing you know, he had a fleet of cars, all painted yellow; and that's how the Yellow Cab Company got started. John Hertz in Chicago is thought to be the originator of Yellow Cab, but he started his taxi service much later than the Harrells. Cleve and A.J. started Yellow Transit Freight Lines in 1929, and eventually another group bought it and turned it into The Yellow Corporation. The trucks were always Swamp Holly Orange.
