Coolest **** ever. When you pulled us down the Cobb rabbit hole, I was consumed. Barely made it out alive. Now I sense you're going to do it again. That Croadster had already grabbed me by the throat in the garage shot in your earlier thread "Cold Calls". Now I'm screwed again.

About as far as you can get from the present-day AMBR contenders, which is to say it was almost exclusively about function back in the day. Might look great, might not, but they were hot rods intended to run hard, run in the dirt, lean on, etc. Love it.

Dang it boss, you’re forcing me to get out of bed and fire up the desktop so I can get a better look. And yeah, there’s that 40 lurking in the background. Cool stuff man.

With the removable top, I'm surprised he never chopped it even lower.

A lot of clever innovation went into that. Any information on whatever became of his car?

I’m currently moving my kid to Montreal for college. Or trying to. Air Canada ate his whole life somewhere over the border and hasn’t coughed it back up yet. Living a bit of a nightmare at the moment… and that’s saying something given the summer I’ve had.

Good question, but no, it's not. Allison used a Stromberg injection carburetor like this one in the first picture. It allowed for inverted flight. In the second picture, the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major, (28 cylinders - 4360 cu. in. 96 inches long overall), used a carburetor similar to the one on the engine in the coupe, but the carburetor was about half the size of that flathead. I can tell you from experience, either one was a chunk when a person had to lift one.

That is a Bendix/Stromberg aviation pressure carburetor.
Now since Tom Cobb's was really a stickler for detail and the proper application of a variety of Bendix Aviation carburetors, you can bet that Cobb's read through this entire list of applications to understand what he was dealing with.

Now you can drive yourself nuts trying to figure out which particular unit you see on the blower as seen in the pictures that @Ryan has posted!
    Thanks from Dennis.

Good luck with that, hope they find it.

With your young fella now north of the border, might have to change your beer of choice to Moosehead, Labatt’s, Kokanee, or Molson’s just for the “closeness.” :)

I for one think the top looks a lot better then the grille. And how did he make plastic bubble on hood?

Ryan, the Cobb coupe is as ugly as home made sin but Toms creative idea of installing a top to compete in the coupe cl*** is pretty cool, he sure had a vision and a dream and damn if he didn't make it happen, Thank you for the history lesson. HRP

I wonder what the idea was behind the dually? Traction at the
launch?….150 mph would have been fast enough for me on tires of the day…….Mark

There appears to be no roll bar, a roll bar was mandatory if I'm not mistaken, was it removable? o_O HRP

Seeing this very cool R-4360 cut away radial engine, really brings back bittersweet memories from back when I was in the military, stationed at Fort Sill in Lawton Oklahoma.

At a local surplus store, which at that time was back in 1974, there was one of these cut away engines just like the one you see posted here, for sale for $500.00.

    IMG_0594.jpeg

I only made $383.00 per month back then, and I was a renter, plus the engine wasn't on a fancy stand with wheels, it was in a crudely cobbled together wooden crate, no wheels, just sitting in the dirt.

And I had no way to transport it, and I had no room for it at the house where I was renting, so I had to just enjoy it for what it was and not get all heart broken that I couldn't justify purchasing it!

    IMG_0610.jpeg

Should have, would have, could have, but no dice!
Many regrets, but that was the way things were back then. I always wondered what happened to that very cool piece of workmanship!
