Technical Model A locking door handles.

Looking at a way to lock my woodie when I get it built. How does the locking mechanism work on model A? I’m thinking it has to be in the latch mechanism and not the outside handle.

 

Door lock is P***ager side only with key,
Its been some time I believe DS was just a rod & small knob that slid.
The PS key just locks cylinder so the handle cannot be turned ?
The reason for PS only I was always
knew in town it was a law / ordinance
to exit vehicle from p***enger side ?

 

My A had lock cylinders in both door handles. I'd guess a right side handle, upside down, on the driver's door.
Twist and remove the key, handle will not move.

Could you use 32 /34 handles where the lock is integral with the handle,?

 

Used to be able to buy a pair of matching outer locking door handles (28-30 Ford I believe), the key fit into the handle, and when locked, prevented it from turning. Originally offered only on the right side (p***enger side) because of laws at the time. You need to buy them as a matching pair, two right side handles will have one upside down on the driver's door.

I bought a pair hoping they would work on my 39 Dodge cab (Ford was $30 at the time, Dodge were $150). After I modified the driver's door handle to fit my Dodge (don't think it can be undone), I found out the mounting screws would make the handles face up and down on the Dodge. I still have both handles around here someplace with matching locks, but I don't see how one could remove the lock cylinders. I ended up springing for the big buck Dodge matching handles.
I think I bought the Ford matching handles from "EB Moss Ford parts" maybe?

Thanks guys. So the handles with the lock does the handle actually do the locking or does it somehow activate something in the latch mechanism? I’m having to use bear claw latch’s and need a way to lock the doors.

 

The lock cylinder does not interface with the latch mechanism, it stops the handle from rotating preventing opening the door.

P*** side had a lock in the handle (locks handle only) and drivers has a slide lock on the inside that locks the latch. Lock the drivers door and get out the p***enger door (then lock that from the outside with a key)…….because it’s unsafe to get out into traffic.

 

That is correct, but if he is changing to the aftermarket bear claw style latches, the driver's inside lock will also be gone. Then the locking handles only are the only way to lock the vehicle. The inside door release levers still function on both side to open the door, even if the handles are locked, at least the set I had worked that way.
