While we are on the subject of Woodies, the National Woodie Club will be holding their 2026 National Meet on the boardwalk in Wildwood NJ, while T.R.O.G. will be racing on the sand on October 3rd. Should be one great weekend!
Mine has been to several of them when mom and dad used to show it all the time. They were really involved in the club and went to as many events as they could.

Well I’m building one using an old rotten 29 Murray bodied fordor as the donor. The history of the fordor is it was from Winner South Dakota. A high school kid had it and someone put sugar in the gas tank, I guess after that it sat and rotted all the structural wood out of it.
Hello, As most folks that have woody wagons know, maintenance is the key. If the wood starts out nice, then minimal maintenance is required. But, anything can happen, small nicks and scratches by bushes, branches or kids on bikes. So, a lot of detailing, including some sanding and sealing is necessary prior to the rainy season or the next car wash. The surface coat is a thin coat of polyurethane or in some cases, just oil or a thin coat of clear varnish. Everyone has their own way to preserve the wood. That was the key to not having a woody as a teenager. It must have been a thing to not have as in 1957-59 era, there were no woody wagons along the coastal beaches. Station wagons, family 4 door sedans, two door wagons and sedans also were a part of the mix. But, all along the coast, no woody wagons. Jnaki It was a part of the inner circle of train p***enger pick up and delivery services available. Also, airport pickup programs by local hotels to bring the p***engers from the airlines to the hotels for their stays. All along the beach from 1959 to 63 were relatively empty of woodies. When the recording industry started the beach/surfing lifestyle color photo album covers, then it started the “woody wagon” stage of owning one. By this time, most woody wagons seen in So Cal were nicely done wood and paint for the custom look. But, some of the older woody wagons seen along the coast in the surf spots were not as nice. Years of toll from salt air, left outside due to not fitting in most older garages made the wood and paint worn. Due to cir***stances, my wife and I decided to get a 283 powered project 1946 Ford Woody. After we saw a nice SBC powered woody for sale, we looked, had the money to buy it on the spot and then a "No Sale" incident popped up. So, the owner being a **** head made the day awful, my wife said it was not in the cards for us to own a woody. A week later, we purchased 327 powered project 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery. It had the base goods, but needed a lot of work to get it right for safety and handling. It is a 1940 deluxe sedan delivery. After months of work and repairs, it was finally road safe and we put on many miles of coastal cruising and in land photo shoots. It had all of the space inside and we did not have to worry about the salt air doing its thing on the wood siding…YRMV
