Technical Brake line/hose fitting question

    If you specified 45 deg fittings you may have 45 degree fittings on that swivel end as it exists but the configuration is used for air brake connections. The, ahem, AN (really JIC as these do not have the tighter thread tolerances of true AN fitting drawings as mentioned before) would be 37 degrees. I do not believe I have ever seen a 45 degree inverted flare nut with female threads. NAPA use to have a big selection of tees for various combinations. Like previously suggested as your supplier what they provided to make sure.

    So, going back to the first issue I posted about needing to connect one end of the hose(s) to my br*** tee. For clarification, here are the specs for the tee I purchased off of Amazon. They say it’s SAE inverted flare. So, it’s 45 degrees according to Google AI which I believe is correct.

    The tech at the hydraulic shop confirmed the fitting was JIC (37 degree). I had him cut the one end of both hoses which will feed the tee for both the front and rear axles. He crimped on a new fitting with a flared make tube nut. This fitting is also JIC (37 degrees). He stated that the steel JIC flared tube would seal against the br*** inverted tee. Before we cut off the crimped fittings he did dig up some male AN-3 br*** adapter fittings that had a 1/8 NPT thread at the other end. He then brought out a br*** tee with female 1/8 NPT threads that the adapters could thread into. I just thought I was going in circles with that approach. It cost me another $60 to have the two new fittings crimped onto the hoses.
    So, problem might be solved if the JIC/SAE combo can actually seal.

    I can now see why @mgermca just bit the bullet and went to a 37 JIC flaring tool.

    The tech did realize this is a brake line on a motor vehicle and not a hydraulic line on your wood splitter? Yes, if you gorilla tighten the tube nut you may get the steel tube flare to distort enough br*** in the inverted fitting to get a seal. It may / may not seal at max hydraulic pressure. I would encourage you to reconsider the plan.

    Yes, I went to them specifically because when I searched for a company to make brake hoses, their name popped up and reference was made to making hoses for vintage cars. Haha!

    Did some more digging on the cylinder for the handbrake. Found this on the Wilwood site.

    This fitting should work for the outlet.

    This 7/16 - 20 tube nut for 3/16 tube should work for the inlet.

    Found these old HAMB threads when searching for if 37 degree fittings will seal against 45 degree fittings. Folks say they have used them and they have sealed but using a “crush washer” or using female 37 degree fittings on 45 degree make fittings. Agree it’s not the correct thing to do, so will see if there options, but I doubt I will find an adapter to go from 37 degree from 45 degree.
    As a retired mech Eng I find all this an incredible cluster of applicable standards. If SAE 45 flare is the “standard” for automotive brake systems, how the hell did 37 degree fittings proliferate in the market place?

    I wouldn’t even consider mismatched flares, especially on brakes. It’s not worth the risk.

    As an engineer, I would tend to agree, but went ahead and used my Milwaukee sharpie on the tube end flare. Tightened it up in the br*** tee, but not even really tight. Like 1/8 of turn after being fully seated by hand. Took off all the coating left by the sharpie. Might ask the hydraulic shop to pressure test it for good measure.

    AroEquip made a fitting like shown
    with inverted tube & nut on one end with a #3,4,6 maybe 8 with Jic male .
    I have a few some where in all my fittings , roughly 25 yrs old .
    @Ziggster as you can see in your picture the threads & in proper taper shape I keed alot of old Oem bras & steel to reshape & set tapper.
    Torque on both 37 & 45 should not requirer alot maybe 1-2 pd there is a recommendation chart.

    In my mind, based on my days working at General Motors, there were tons of different fittings available. I had Aeroquip, Parker, Gates, etc catalogues.
    Interesting story about Aeroquip. At the time, all hoses were what they called “source controlled”. This meant that the purchasing department had to buy the hose/part from the vendor listed on the drawing. Back then it was Aeroquip. One day, while walking through the plant I noticed a bunch of Parker hoses. I said WTF! Did some digging and got my hand slapped. Turns out a former employee started his own hose company in anticipation of a big military contact for the government to buy helicopters or planes (can’t recall exactly). He went to a lot of trouble to make his shop fully certified for aviation use. Turns out the government did a 180 on their plan, so he was left high and dry, but then called in some favours. So purchasing department started ordering all the hoses from him, and he was a Parker rep. I made a stink about it, but was quietly told to shut up, and change all the drawings to Parker. Lol!
    I’ll have to check to see what the torque spec is as it can’t be very much. I won’t have a way to check it without the proper torque wrench, but I’m now curious.
