I've rounded up some f-100 brakes for the project, but I need some help..... I know....... there should be info on this in the tech section, but the only mention of the 51/52 f-100 brake swap, is on 46-48 and 53-56 ford pu's. Are 51/52's basically the same?.... 11inch or 12inch? What bearings do I need and will buick drums work with the f-1 hub and backing plates ..... etc... help
Early fords and F100 use the same outer bearings and cups, Timken 09067 bearing and Timken 09195 cup. The inner wheel bearings are different. You need a bearing with the smaller early ford ID. The bearing is Timken 14116, it has the ID of the early ford and the OD of the F100 hub. The stock F100 inner cup Timken 14276 is used. The seal is a Victor 49195 or national 45461. I think Speedway sell the bearins and seals as a kit.
Made this switch years back and I remember that you will have to grind the edge off the inner bearing to match the inside radius on the spindle or your hub ***embly will not seat on the spindle. I will also tell you that it is worth all the extra work changing over because of self energizing brakes and more drum area. the ****ster
If you want to use F1 brakes, which are 11", on 37 to 48 Ford spindles( yes I know they are not the same spindles) just bolt them on. The 42-48 spindles will accept the F1 (48-52 Ford pickup) directly, no adaptors. The 37-41 round back spindles have to have a relief ground on the top of the spindle to clear the wheel cylinders. F1's hubs take the same bearing inner & outer as 37-48 Ford. You can't use Buick drums, because they are 12". Good luck guys
Thats great info, thanks allot guys --- one more question though - could you use the 51/52 hub mounted on the outside of the Buick drum ( as the 46-48 hub is used??? )
Inner race Timken part # 14276 Inner bearing Timken part # 14116 Outer race Timken part # 09195 Outer bearing Timken part # 09067 Grease seal National part # 450461 These are the part #s I used to put the F1 brakes on my 37-41 spindles. I used aftermarket drums, big mistake! They were way out of balance. I ended up balancing them my self with a bubble balencer. Musch better now but I had to remove a ton of material from one side and weld on a large weight on the other. I am currently shopping the swap meets for a turnable set of originals. As stated befor I did have to grind a notch oin the top of the spindle to clear the wheel cylinder but it is minimal. The brakes work great! Does any one know of drums that will interchange with these and did they make any with fins?
So would 53 hubs ( just the hubs ) fit the 37-41 spindles ? or do you have to change the inside race and bearing ?
